Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly dining with Donald Trump on Friday at Mar-a-Lago, after the president-elect this week threatened Canada, Mexico, and China with substantial tarriffs.

Tariffs aren’t the only form of international influence Trump is pursuing before inauguration day. Senator Lindsey Graham, a close adviser, said on Friday that Trump hopes a ceasefire deal can be reached over the Israel-Hamas war before he takes office.

The international action comes a day after Trump roasted Democrats in a bizarre AI-generated Thanksgiving video which concluded with the president-elect bursting out of a turkey and dancing to YMCA.

The video, which parodies National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, shows a computer-generated President Joe Biden, whose head is superimposed on the body of Chevy Chase, carving a turkey.

“Save the neck for me, Clark,” California Representative Adam Schiff urges beside a giggling Vice President Kamala Harris. Biden continues to slice the turkey before Trump breaks out of the dry, crumbling carcass and grooves to the Village People’s hit.

Retailers warn customers about price hikes from Trump tariffs

Friday 29 November 2024 23:51 , Josh Marcus

Retailers have taken to warning customers to buy products now before the expected price hikes that could come when Donald Trump takes office and puts the sweeping tariffs he has promised into place.

Companies ranging from Julie Skin, a beauty brand, to outdoor goods retailer Tarptent to Finally Home Furnishings have all sounded the alarm, according to an analysis from The Wall Street Journal.

The beauty brand warned customers might face 25 percent higher prices on signature products like a filtered showerhead, while the furnishing company launched a “Pre-Tariff Sale” on Facebook.

“There is a misconception that the countries exporting goods will bear the cost of the tariffs, but that is simply not true,” owner Sydney Arnold told the paper.

Joe Biden has panned Donald Trump’s plan to hit Americans with massive import taxes on goods from Mexico and Canada, hoping his successor will walk back the proposal.

The president was asked about Trump’s plan to hike the cost of Mexican and Canadian products by 25 percent via executive order if both countries did not take steps to curb what he described as unacceptable flows of drugs and migrants into the U.S. across their respective borders.

Biden, who is in Nantucket for his family’s annual Thanksgiving vacation, told reporters: “I hope he rethinks it. I think it’s a counterproductive thing to do.”

A former Trump administration Food and Drug Administration commissioner is worried that the incoming administration’s pick of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead a key health agency will prove dangerous.

“I think if RFK follows through on his intentions, and I believe he will, and I believe he can, it will cost lives in this country,” Scott Gottlieb said during a Friday appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box.

“You’re going to see measles, mumps and rubella vaccination rates go down, and like I said, if we lose another 5 percent [of vaccinations], which could happen in the next year or two, we will see large measles outbreaks,” he added.

Trump wants Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal before inauguration, report says

Friday 29 November 2024 22:35 , Oliver O’Connell

Senator Lindsey Graham has told Axios that Donald Trump wants a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza before he returns to the White House on January 20, 2025.

There are still 101 hostages including seven Americans held by Hamas. Israeli intelligence believes about half are still alive. More than 44,000 Palestinians have been killed in nearly 14 months since the war began after the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.

“Trump is more determined than ever to release the hostages and supports a ceasefire that includes a hostage deal. He wants to see it happening now,” Graham told Axios.

“I want people in Israel and in the region to know that Trump is focused on the hostages issue. He wants the killing to stop and the fighting to end.”

The senator added: “I hope President Trump and the Biden administration will work together during the transition period to release the hostages and get a ceasefire.”

Graham has just returned from a visit to the Middle East. He contends that Trump wants a deal in Gaza so he can focus on other foreign policy objectives in the region — normalizing relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia and forming a regional alliance against Iran.

Trudeau says Trump will be “hurting American industry” with Canada tariffs

Friday 29 November 2024 22:25 , Oliver O’Connell

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday that if President-elect Donald Trump follows through on this threat to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products, he would be raising prices for Americans and hurting American businesses.

Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico if the countries don’t stop what he called the flow of drugs and migrants across southern and northern borders. He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico as one of his first executive orders.

“It is important to understand that Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out. There’s no question about it,” Trudeau said to reporters in Prince Edward Island in Atlantic Canada.

Full story: These local sheriffs are already preparing to help Trump carry out his mass deportation plans

Friday 29 November 2024 21:40 , Oliver O’Connell

Donald Trump’s plan to immediately carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history upon taking office is banking on a key ally: conservative sheriffs.

There are some 6,000 federal immigration agents in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), but the incoming administration is counting on sympathetic local law enforcement to be its eyes and ears in communities and jails across the country.

While police chiefs are appointed, sheriffs are often elected and exercise broad powers, including running county jail systems. Many right-leaning sheriffs, whose own partisan politics align with the new administration’s, are eager to join forces.

Someone yelled to the president, “Joe! We love you!” He gave a thumbs up and said, “Thank you.”

He confirmed to a reporter that he expected to speak with Donald Trump again during the transition period. The family then stopped in at the leather goods shop Craftmasters of Nantucket.

What happened to Trump’s border wall?

Friday 29 November 2024 21:10 , Oliver O’Connell

…and no, Mexico didn’t pay for it.

Josh Marcus writes:

Donald Trump doesn’t really talk about the border wall anymore.

After making the wall the central part of his 2016 campaign, shutting down the government for weeks in an unsuccessful bid to secure its funding, and spending billions to build it anyway, the president-elect’s immigration politics have shifted to an even more aggressive place this time around.

Instead of a wall, paid for by Mexico, Trump now wants a “bloody” mass deportation operation immediately removing millions of people, including by potentially reviving family separation.

But the federal border wall, spanning more than 450 miles across four states, remains. It continues to deeply impact the people, environment, and politics of the border and beyond.

And it’s an idea that’s spreading. During the eight years of Trump and Biden, Republican states began building their own separate border walls, too.

Trump reposts article on sheriffs gearing up to help with mass deportations

Friday 29 November 2024 18:20 , Oliver O’Connell

This morning Donald Trump posted a link to a Wall Street Journal article about how a group of local sheriffs are gearing up to help with the president-elect’s plan for mass deportations.

The incoming administration will need help from local law enforcement to carry out its plans to detain and remove people and is reportedly weighing changes to give sheriffs more power and reward jurisdictions that cooperate, penalizing those that do not — blue states and cities.

There is already an organization keen to help.

Per the Journal:

The pro-Trump sheriffs eager to help with deportations include self-described “constitutional sheriffs,” who believe they have a duty to protect citizens against federal overreach.

Their group, called the Constitutional Sheriffs & Peace Officers Association, held a conference in Las Vegas earlier this year where speakers included former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne, who suggested 15 million immigrants in the U.S. are military-aged men here to take over the country. Byrne, an early proponent of stolen-election claims in 2020, has also said he is helping to fund the sheriffs’ movement.

The group’s founder, Richard Mack, a former sheriff, maintained in an interview with the Journal Tuesday that many migrants have been let in to bolster Democratic voting rolls. “I mean, come on, what else is there? Why do the Democrats want them here?” Mack said. Unauthorized immigrants or those in the asylum system risk deportation and jail for illegally casting ballots. Voter fraud by noncitizens is exceedingly rare, election experts have found.

Trump’s call for ‘energy dominance’ is likely to run into real-world limits

Friday 29 November 2024 16:09 , Oliver O’Connell

President-elect Donald Trump is set to create a National Energy Council that he says will establish American “energy dominance” around the world as he seeks to boost U.S. oil and gas drilling and move away from President Joe Biden’s focus on climate change.

The energy council — to be led by North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Trump’s choice to head the Interior Department — will be key in Trump’s pledge to “drill, drill, drill” and sell more oil and other energy sources to allies in Europe and around the globe.

The new council will be granted sweeping authority over federal agencies involved in energy permitting, production, generation, distribution, regulation and transportation, with a mandate to cut bureaucratic red tape, enhance private sector investments and focus on innovation instead of “totally unnecessary regulation,” Trump said.

But Trump’s energy wishes are likely to run into real-world limits.

‘Pre-tariff sales’ cast shadow on Black Friday

Friday 29 November 2024 14:22 , James Liddell

While Black Friday reels in a swarm of sale-hungry consumers, US businesses have begun broadcasting their pre-tariff sales after Donald Trump tariff plans threaten to raise costs – and subsequently prices.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, businesses are urging customers to make the most of their “pre-tariff” bargains.

“Pre-Tariff Sale! This is not a drill,” declares a Facebook post from Finally Home Furnishings.

The journal reported that beauty brand Jolie Skin emailed customers urging them to “lock in our current prices”.

“These are the best discounts we will likely offer until this time next year, and with potential tariffs looming, they might be the best prices for a lot longer than that,” a Facebook post from outdoor and sporting-goods retailer Tarptent read.

The president-elect promised to impose tariffs of 60 percent on Chinese goods imported into the US, and a blanket tariff of between 10 and 20 percent across other countries.

On Monday, Trump threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on US neighbors Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10 percent levy on Chinese imports into the country.

One Democrat hailing from the upper chamber, who spoke to the outlet under conditions of anonymity, claimed that the border issue was the party’s achilles heel, resulting in Trump returning to the White House

“We destroyed ourselves on the immigration issue in ways that were entirely predictable and entirely manageable. We utterly mismanaged that issue, including our Democratic caucus here,” the Democratic senator said.

“That’s political malpractice. That’s not someone else’s fault. That’s not the groups pushing us around.”

After pleading that Harris will “go away and never, ever come back,” Morgan also took aim at her aides on the campaign trail, which ended in her defeat at the ballot box to Donald Trump earlier this month.

“It turns out that Baron Trump, who looks like a runway model, was telling his father, you need to go on podcasts, you need to go on Joe Rogan,” he said on Wednesday.

“[Trump] was three hours late to a rally because he was doing Joe Rogan because that was so important. So, Barron Trump is a lot smarter than everybody in the Harris [campaign].”

Earlier this year Trump began trying to court young male voters by engaging with YouTubers and “bro” podcasters, many of whom were young, wildly popular with Gen-Z and sympathetic toward his MAGA movement.

Barron was said to have made the final call on the podcasts that his father appeared on, according to a report by Time early this month.

ICYMI: Putin warns that Trump is ‘not safe’

Friday 29 November 2024 10:40 , James Liddell

Russian President Vladimir Putin heaped praise on Donald Trump but said he did not believe the president-elect was safe after attempts on his life.

Speaking to reporters in Kazakhstan after a summit on Thursday, Putin said he had been shocked by the way the election campaign had unfolded.

He cited “the absolutely uncivilized methods used to battle against Trump, up to and including an assassination attempt – and more than once”.

“By the way, in my opinion, he is not safe now,” Putin said.

Trump was wounded after being shot in the ear during an assassination attempt at a Butler, Pennsylvania, rally in July.

In a separate incident in September, a man was charged with attempted assassination after allegedly positioning himself with a rifle at one of Trump’s Florida golf courses.

Friday 29 November 2024 09:20 , Oliver O’Connell

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is pushing back on Donald Trump’s claim she promised to effectively close her country’s northern border with the United States after the incoming American leader alleged that she’d pledged to stop all migration through the country.

On Wednesday, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to claim that Sheinbaum had made such a promise during a phone call earlier in the day. He wrote that she had “agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border.”

But Sheinbaum quickly clapped back in a post of her own on X, as Andrew Feinberg reports.

Thanks to Trump, your next iPhone is likely to be even more expensive

Friday 29 November 2024 06:00 , Oliver O’Connell

President-elect Donald Trump has promised to impose tariffs on China which are set to make a wide variety of goods more expensive come the new year. That may include your next iPhone.

Trump said during the campaign that he would impose a 60 percent tariff on all Chinese products, with 10 to 25 percent tariffs being applied to other major trading partners.

If Trump goes ahead with his 60 percent tariff on Chinese goods, iPhone prices are likely to increase significantly. Economists have estimated that an iPhone 16 for $1,000 may cost $300 more under Trump’s policies.

Five Republican senators could thwart Trump’s agenda and nominees — here’s who they are…

Friday 29 November 2024 01:00 , Oliver O’Connell

Eric Garcia writes:

Donald Trump’s nominees will now need to be confirmed by the Senate, which Republicans control with a 53-seat majority. Trump got a reality check last week when Matt Gaetz, the embattled former Republican congressman, pulled his nomination for attorney general after it became clear he would face Senate opposition.

During his presidency, Joe Biden had to grapple with Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, the conservative Democrats-turned-independents, when he wanted to pass anything. Now Trump may face his own bloc of opposition within his party. Here are the Republican senators who could be a roadblock to Trump’s agenda.

The president-elect announced that he plans to introduce a 25 percent tariff on “all products” entering the US from Canada and Mexico and an additional 10 percent tariff on China, prompting fears he has set the stage for a bitter global trade war ahead of his inauguration on January 20, 2025.

Trump’s tariffs in his first term did little to alter the economy. This time things could be very different

Thursday 28 November 2024 23:30 , AP

Donald Trump loved to use tariffs on foreign goods during his first presidency. But their impact was barely noticeable in the overall economy, even if their aftershocks were clear in specific industries.

The data show they never fully delivered on his promised factory jobs. Nor did they provoke the avalanche of inflation that critics feared.

This time, though, his tariff threats might be different.

Biden slams latest Russian attack on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure

Thursday 28 November 2024 21:38 , Oliver O’Connell

While earlier Vladimir Putin praised US President-elect Donald Trump in remarks during a visit to Kazakhstan, President Joe Biden gave the following statement regarding the most recent attack on Ukraine by Russia.

Overnight, Russia carried out a horrific aerial attack against Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities report that Russia launched nearly 200 missiles and drones against Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure, depriving Ukrainian civilians of access to electricity. This attack is outrageous and serves as yet another reminder of the urgency and importance of supporting the Ukrainian people in their defense against Russian aggression.

On this day, my message to the Ukrainian people is clear: the United States stands with you. Earlier this year, and at my direction, the United States began prioritizing air defense exports so they go to Ukraine first. The Department of Defense has delivered hundreds of additional air defense missiles to Ukraine, as a consequence of this decision, and further deliveries are underway. For months, my Administration has been working to help Ukraine increase the resilience of its energy grid in preparation for the winter, and the Department of Defense continues to surge other critical capabilities to Ukraine, including artillery, rockets, and armored vehicles.

Russia continues to underestimate the bravery, resilience, and determination of the Ukrainian people. The United States stands with more than 50 countries in support of Ukraine and its fight for freedom.

Trump announced that Canada and Mexico could soon see a 25 percent tariff added to all imported goods while China could face an additional 10 percent. Trump claims this is part of an effort to curtail “crime and drugs” coming into the U.S. and slow the number of illegal border crossings – but many critics are concerned it could lead to rising prices.
