Donald Trump is suing CBS News for $10bn alleging that the 60 Minutes interview with his rival Kamala Harris was deceptively edited to unlawfully influence the 2024 presidential election.
Thursday’s long-shot claim, filed less than a week before Election Day, follows his obsessive attacks on CBS and threats to revoke its license.
With five days of campaigning to go in the 2024 race, Harris and Trump are making their final pitches to voters, spending Thursday at rallies across the crucial Sun Belt states of Arizona and Nevada.
The Democratic presidential nominee hit back at her Republican rival after he vowed to “protect” women “whether the women like it or not” at a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Wednesday.
“Donald Trump thinks he should get to make decisions about what you do with your body. Whether you like it or not,” Harris posted on X.
In a bizarre stunt prior to that speech, Trump had posed in a garbage truck dressed as a sanitation worker in an attempt to troll Harris and Joe Biden after the latter allegedly called MAGA voters “garbage” in anger over comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s already-notorious Madison Square Garden joke about Puerto Rico.

Arizona enlists county employees to help tackle a surge of 2-page early ballots
01:15 , AP
Employees for Arizona’s most populous county have been reassigned to help election workers with an around-the-clock operation to process early ballots that are an unusually long two pages.
Election officials in Maricopa County must verify each voter’s signature on early ballot envelopes and then remove the ballot pages so they can be prepared for actual counting. The county was unsure how long it would need to keep up the 24-hour operation, which kicked off Thursday night.

JD Vance sat down with Joe Rogan for an interview on his podcast, broadcast on Thursday, and soon both were gushing that Donald Trump looks better now than he did in 2016.
The bold claim came early on in the Republican vice presidential nominee’s appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience when the host asked him whether he had any doubts about becoming Trump’s running mate.
Rogan references the enormous change the role brings to a person’s life and the intense responsibility the job entails.
“Everybody’s watched presidents age radically, dramatically,” he said, adding: “Everyone but Trump.”
Vance responded: “Yeah, it’s kind of amazing.”

Trump ‘devalues’ women making own choices, says Harris

Kamala Harris has a closing argument. Donald Trump has something else
Thursday 31 October 2024 22:20 , John Bowden
The last full week of the 2024 campaign is finally, mercifully, almost over.
Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are neck-and-neck in national polling, as they’ve been for months. In more than a half-dozen swing states, the margins separating the candidates are very close — and either candidate could clearly pull ahead by Monday.
There are signs, however, of which way this thing may be going. Harris is closing, by any honest account, with a show of strength. Her thousands-strong crowd on the Ellipse on Wednesday, not to mention the thousands more turned away for lack of space, was a shot directly across the bow of Trump, whose own crowd began abandoning him once again last week in Michigan. The former president kept his supporters waiting for hours while he talked to Joe Rogan.

Harris: ‘Most Americans ‘exhausted’ by Trump’s rhetoric, ‘ready to turn the page’
Thursday 31 October 2024 22:10 , Oliver O’Connell
In an exclusive interview, Yamiche Alcindor of NBC News asked Kamala Harris about Donald Trump riding around on a garbage truck in an attempt to draw attention to Joe Biden’s comments on Tuesday night and whether the president’s comments may have undermined her own messaging about being a president for all Americans.
Vice President Harris responded: “Well, I’ve addressed how I feel about those comments. One, that the President explained what he meant, but two, I do not believe, and I will speak for myself, that we should ever criticize people based on who they vote for.
“But let’s understand again, where we are in this election. On the one hand, you have Donald Trump, who refers to people by the most demeaning words, who attempts to really take from them the dignity that they so rightly deserve. He is someone who talks full-time about the enemy within. He speaks ill of America. He refers to us as a garbage can, and he does not understand that most people are exhausted with his rhetoric, exhausted with that approach, exhausted with an approach that Donald Trump has is trying to divide our country and have Americans point fingers at each other.
“They’re done with it, and they’re ready to turn the page and accept and receive a new generation of leadership, which I offer.”
When will we know who won the 2024 presidential election? Experts weigh in on how it could play out
Thursday 31 October 2024 22:03 , Oliver O’Connell
It’s been a dramatic, high-stakes presidential race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
The polls are neck-and-neck and analysts are reluctant to make a solid prediction for which candidate will win.
Now, the question many are asking is: When will the race be called?
The result is called by the media in the days or week(s) after November 5 but this is only ever a projection, with the election officially certified on January 6 by Congress.
Experts said that the timeline for calling the race largely depends on two things: how close the election is in individual states and the specific laws of those states regarding counting votes and potential recounts, which all vary.

Republican Larry Hogan believes he can convince Democrats to vote for him as Election Day draws near

Thursday was the perfect weather to do some last-minute voter canvassing. Larry Hogan said he might just do that.
Maryland’s former two-term governor is in the home stretch of a Senate campaign which began only in February — a run, he says, that was born out of frustration over the inaction just a short drive away in Washington, particularly as the Senate this year failed to reach a compromise (once again) on border security and immigration reform.
He was outside of the Odenton library on Thursday with less than a week to go in the election, revving up a small crowd of volunteers who were greeting early voters. Hogan spoke to a handful of supporters and journalists on scene and projected confidence, remarking that in every race he’d run, “everyone has always counted us out, and we’ve always come out on top”.

Donald Trump prolongs uproar over Puerto Rico slur by posing in garbage truck
Thursday 31 October 2024 08:50 , Joe Sommerlad
Good morning!
Donald Trump got off his private plane in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Wednesday evening and, donning a bright orange high-visibility safety vest, got into a garbage truck in a desperate attempt to troll Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
With Election Day looming, both the Republican and Democratic candidates are hoping to leverage the racist comments made against Puerto Rico at Trump’s rally in Madison Square Garden on Sunday, when comedian Tony Hinchcliffe called the US territory “a floating island of garbage”, potentially alienating millions of Latino voters.
Working hard to dissociate himself from the controversy, Trump has leapt on a gaffe President Biden made on Tuesday in which he responded to the bad taste joke by suggesting the only “garbage” he could see were Trump supporters trashing their fellow citizens.
Trump’s publicity stunt truck in Wisconsin – which he struggled to get into – was emblazoned with his campaign logo and the former president clearly enjoyed leaning out of its window (recalling his recent McDonald’s drive-thru photo-op) to ask the press: “How do you like my garbage truck?”
He then, inevitably, denied knowing anything about Hinchcliffe before being sped around the runway tarmac in circles for no good reason.
Trump: “I don’t know anything about the comedian. I don’t know who he is. I’ve never seen him. I heard he made a statement but it was just a statement that he made. He’s a comedian, what can I tell you? I know nothing about him.” pic.twitter.com/UmAEDy56g6

Eric Garcia writes:
With less than a week to go, campaigns have inundated any state or district with a competitive election with television ads to make their closing argument. This can be especially aggravating, especially after a long day of work where the average voter might just want to watch some mindless reality television or some football.
But in truth, campaigns needs to run ads there to meet voters where they are. This might be why we are seeing more ostentatious ads this election cycle than ever before.
While in her speeches, Vice President Kamala Harris has focused on the danger of Donald Trump’s rhetoric — even going so far as to call him a “petty tyrant” — most of her ads have gone all-in on the economy.
Meanwhile, Republicans, led by Trump, have done a slew of anti-transgender ads, focusing largely on the issue of transgender women in men’s sports.

Harris confronts pro-Palestinian protesters for third time today and lauds young voters impatient with change
Thursday 31 October 2024 01:49 , AP
At her campaign rally in Wisconsin tonight, Kamala Harris quickly noted her history with Madison, telling the audience that “when I was five years old my parents taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison” and she lived in the college town.
The venue, filled with young attendees, has reached its 10,000-person capacity, according to the sheriff’s department.
Harris has confronted pro-Palestinian protesters at all three of her events on Wednesday, using each interruption to fire up her supporters.
At her rallies in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, a group of people protested on behalf of Palestinians, criticizing Harris for the Biden administration’s handling of the war between Israel and Hamas.
“We all want the war in Gaza to end and to get the hostages out and I will do everything in my power to make it heard and known,” Harris said in Wisconsin. “And everyone has a right to be heard, but right now I am speaking.”

Harris’ supporters erupted at her comment, a reference to what she told then-Vice President Mike Pence during their debate in 2020. The reaction largely drowned out the protesters.
The vice president struck a conciliatory tone in Wisconsin on Wednesday, telling voters she is looking for “common ground” with people who disagree with her and “progress” on problems they face.
“Unlike Donald Trump, I don’t believe that people who disagree with me are the enemy,” she said in Wisconsin.
One of the loudest cheers of the night came when Harris specifically called out first-time voters and complimented the fact that young people are impatient with change.
“I see your power,” Harris told the audience, earning a roar from the young people. “I’ve lived the promise of America and today I see the promise of America in all of you,” Harris added.
