As an organization that works to advance equity for women and girls, AAUW takes great pride in the nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris as a candidate for President of the United States.
She has broken through many barriers, becoming the first woman and the first Black, Indian, and South Asian American to serve as a Vice President and now nominated to be President.
As Vice President, Harris carried the weight of her ancestors into the second highest public office of our country.
Potentially as a woman in the highest office of the land, this offers an unprecedented opportunity to push our country closer to justice and equality for marginalized communities and for all Americans.

Harris is poised to be a pivotal player in international as well as domestic affairs due to her background and service on the Homeland Security, Intelligence and Judiciary committees when she was a Senator. She can help direct big issues like criminal justice reform, voting rights protections, health care and wage growth for many.
With her formidable smarts, frank communication style and innate ability to connect deeply with everyday Americans, she will show the world what a strong woman leader looks like.
And she will inspire young women and girls to run for office in a brand new and powerful way.
