Wexford, Savannah’s Irish Pub made USA TODAY’s list of best restaurants in the country. The list, which was released this week, features 44 restaurants, ranging from high-end, white-tablecloth establishments with celebrity chefs to off-the-beaten-path barbecue joints and rustic fish shacks.
With a detailed design that evokes an authentic Irish pub within a 150-year-old Savannah City Market building, Wexford’s comforting and flavorful dishes, from pot roast and fish and chips to classic corned beef and cabbage, tell the shared story between Georgia’s first city and the Emerald Isle county responsible for much of Savannah’s mid-1800s Irish immigration.

Wexford is a much-needed addition to Savannah’s culinary landscape and provides the Irish American museum the city did not know it needed. Situated in a decidedly tourist area of the city’s Landmark Historic District, Wexford draws as many locals back downtown as visitors, said Tim Strickland. The food and daily Irish music playing live on the second floor are part of the draw for Savannah families.
“Our goal was to build a pub that people wanted to come as a family, with kids,” said Swanson. “And if you come here on a Friday or Saturday night, it’s full. There’s strollers everywhere, kids playing. It’s an all-ages thing. You know, you’ll see an 80-year-old over here and a 2-yea- old over there. And so, it’s a proper pub.”
“I can’t speak for these two,” said Tim Strickland about his sister and Swanson, “but what surprised me was how fast we arrived between what we knew we wanted to do and where we are at this point.”
