Orginally from Vicksburg, Mississippi, McLeod is studying athletic training and plans to pursue a master’s degree. She said the scholarship money she won will help her stay more involved on campus, WBRZ reported.

But for McLeod, the win means more than a crown, it means community.

“I know that Louisiana chose me, and it’s more than me choosing Louisiana just for education,” McLeod said. “I’m going to be calling this my home, and Louisiana I’m officially yours!”

McLeod will go on to represent the state at the Miss America pageant, which kicks off Sept. 7.
