The Spurs and Thunder officially stamped their rivalry at the start of the Western Conference finals.

Victor Wembanyama threw the first punch with 41 points and 24 rebounds in that classic Game 1 thriller and admitted afterward that part of his motivation was watching Shai Gilgeous-Alexander accept the MVP trophy just before tip-off.

Looking at the early odds for 2027 NBA MVP, Wemby might not have to worry about that in the future.

The Spurs phenom is the favorite to win 2026-27 MVP with +200 odds, ahead of the back-to-back winner in Gilgeous-Alexander at +330.

It’s quite an amazing move from sportsbooks considering the two teams have only played two games of their Western Conference finals series.

SGA bounced back with a gem in Game 2 of the series with 30 points, nine assists and one turnover en route to a 122-113 win that evened the series at 1-1.

That said, it’s easy to imagine Wemby putting up performances like the one we saw in Game 1 on a regular basis, regardless of how this season ends for the Spurs.

He’s one of a dozen NBA players who have scored 40 or more points in at least 10 times before turning 23 years old, a list that includes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, LeBron James, and Shaquille O’Neal.

He finished third in voting this season, behind Nikola Jokic, and his defensive impact would likely give him the edge over the rest of the field.

Betting on the NBA?

Yes, it’s way too early to look at MVP odds for next season when the current one isn’t over yet, but the odds reflect what we’re seeing on the court.

Wemby is coming, and there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of stopping him.
