Bamboo Sushi
The world’s first certified sustainable sushi restaurant started on Southeast 28th Avenue in 2008. Today it has six locations in the Portland area along with one each in Seattle, the San Francisco Bay Area and Denver. Readers who nominated Bamboo Sushi like its sustainability and the quality of the fish. Several people also recommended the Green Machine roll, which has tempura fried green beans, green onion, avocado and cilantro sweet chili aioli.

Masu Sushi
Our dining critic Michael Russell picked Masu as one of the best Portland restaurants in 2016. He praised the nigiri, salmon, scallops and ramen. Readers who nominated it like the “consistently excellent and fresh fish” and warm atmosphere.

Mirakutei Sushi & Ramen
This restaurant that was founded in 2011 has shown up on Russell’s lists of the best ramen, the best dumplings and the best cheap eats over the years. Readers like the cozy space and the variety of dishes on offer. One reader is especially fond of the Dragon Roll, which has shrimp tempura, salmon, unagi and avocado.

Miyamoto
This Southeast Portland spot landed on Russell’s list of favorite sushi spots last year as the best party sushi. “Because sometimes you want to pair some shrimp tempura and a California hand roll with a glass of Pliny The Younger, Russian River Brewing’s limited release triple IPA, Miyamoto lets diners order beers from Roscoe’s next door,” he said. Readers like the creative rolls and “low-key neighborhood vibe.”

Murata
This downtown restaurant was on Russell’s list of favorite sushi spots for having the best traditional sushi. “Opened in 1988 and ranked among Portland’s best sushi restaurants ever since, Murata remains an elite place to drop by for a business lunch, date night or quick dinner before a show at the nearby Keller Auditorium,” he said. Readers like its “impeccable service” and authentic Japanese sushi, as one nominator put it: “none of the ‘fusion’ crap.”

Saburo’s
This Westmoreland spot made Russell’s 2018 ranking of Portland’s top 10 sushi restaurants. “The nigiri are as big as your fist and the vibe is great,” he said. Readers who nominated Saburo’s almost all mentioned the big portions as one reason why. It’s the “perfect combination of taste and affordability,” said a reader.

Yama Sushi & Izakaya
This restaurant was named one of the best in Southeast Portland by Russell in 2015, when he recommended making a reservation for the omakase, or chef’s choice meal. Our readers love the staff and praise the fresh ingredients and generous portions.

Yoko’s
This one also made Russell’s top 10 list in 2018. “Portland’s definitive neighborhood sushi restaurant, this Creston-Kenilworth joint has friendly service, beach-shack decor, reggae on the soundtrack and good nigiri, tempura and udon noodles,” he said. Readers like that it’s a woman-owned restaurant and call it “intimate and not pretentious.”

Yuubi
Russell likes the omakase at this Beaverton spot, and readers like the unique rolls, high-quality fish and attention to detail.

Zilla Sake
Russell picked Zilla as the No. 3 sushi restaurant in 2018. It “boasts the city’s best sake selection and fantastic sushi sourced from Hawaii and Japan,” he said. Readers like that it’s woman-owned and called it “elevated yet unpretentious.”
