The Super Bowl is this weekend, and Augusta’s fire department will have more than enough to eat.

On Thursday, the firefighters at the Telfair Street fire station were all smiles and laughs as several bags of food and coolers of drinks were brought in for them. This was a surprise from Walmart as part of Firefighter Appreciation Week.

Philip Myhand, manager of the Evans Walmart, said they brought enough food to feed every station. The bundles included wings, sausage, chips, Pepsi, and more. Similar bundles were donated to 40 other fire stations all over Georgia, according to a news release from Walmart.

Sgt. Evan Scureman, who is Augusta’s “Firefighter of the Year,” had no clue this was happening and was simply told that something was going by.

“That’s a huge amount of food and it’s really nice to be able to get a gift like that from Walmart,” he said. “We share so much together….we watch the games together….it really is like a family.”

Augusta Fire Chief Antonio Burden also expressed his gratitude to Walmart, calling them tremendous community partners. He went on to remind residents about how important it is to be safe in the kitchen when it comes to your Super Bowl meals.

“Unattended cooking still remains one of the No. 1 causes of residential fires,” Burden said. “So, for whatever reason, if you need to leave the kitchen, tag someone in to come into the kitchen and just keep an eye on things.”
