For Notre Dame, it will be an opportunity to win the program’s first national championship since 1988. Should it defeat the Buckeyes, Freeman would become the first Black coach in FBS history to win a national championship.

To reach that destination, the Irish will have to get through an Ohio State team that has looked like the best team in the country over the past month. The Buckeyes have won each of their first three playoff games by at least 14 points, a run that most recently featured a 28-14 victory against Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

It will be the ninth all-time meeting between the historic powers, with Notre Dame winning only two of the previous eight matchups. In fact, the Irish haven’t defeated the Buckeyes since 1936, with Ohio State riding a six-game win streak in the series.

Here are predictions from across Network on how the game will unfold:

  • Joey Kaufman, Columbus Post Dispatch:It’s hard not to take Ohio State. I like the Buckeyes by two scores. Too many weapons on offense, especially at wide receiver. The defense isn’t yielding much at all. Feels like the team is on a mission. But the Irish held them to 17 and 21 points in their last two meetings, so it won’t be easy to move the ball.
  • Mike Berardino, South Bend Tribune:  “I’m picking Notre Dame 33-27 in double overtime. As Riley Leonard says, culture wins.
  • Matt Hayes, USA TODAY Network:Ohio State, but after what Notre Dame has produced in the playoff — winning games with a stout defense and smart football — I wouldn’t be shocked in the least if the Irish won.
