California Gov. Gavin Newsom appeared on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Wednesday to discuss President Trump, the upcoming midterm elections and his political future — and he admitted even his own children are desperate for him to leave politics.
The expected White House hopeful‘s freewheeling interview included embarrassing family revelations, a historical flub and getting roasted for his famously shellacked hair.
In response to a question from Kimmel, who also helped launch ex-Rep. Eric Swalwell’s disastrous campaign for governor, Newsom revealed that his 17-year-old daughter is literally counting down the days until he leaves office in January.
“She has a calendar and she pulls every single day to her liberation day,” Newsom said, describing her impending freedom from “the tyranny of her father who’s destroyed her life because he’s in politics.”
But eight years in the governor’s office may not be enough for Newsom, who is still entertaining a 2028 presidential run.
“I ain’t screwing this one up, man,” he said.
The Democrat also discussed Vice President Kamala Harris, whom he insisted he wouldn’t challenge for the Democratic presidential nomination.
“She was our nominee just months — it was 18 months or so ago,” Newsom declared.

“Was it really 18 months ago? Oh my God,” Kimmel said.
Harris actually became the Democratic nominee in August 2024 — nearly 27 months ago — and lost the 2024 election to Trump 23 months ago.
Kimmel himself has been locked in an increasingly bitter feud with Trump after his show was suspended following comments the comedian made after the killing of Charlie Kirk.
Trump called for the comedian’s firing in April after a joke about Melania Trump — just as the Federal Communications Commission launched a review of ABC’s broadcast licenses.
Newsom also bizarrely entertained the prospect of wandering Hollywood Boulevard dressed as Spider-Man on Halloween, after Kimmel suggested his 10-year-old son would prefer seeing him as the superhero.
“I might be on Hollywood Boulevard … rambling to myself,” the governor muttered.
The interview also featured a seemingly gift-wrapped punchline when Kimmel asked whether Trump had commented on Newsom’s physique.
“He does have a bit of a fixation with — forgive me — people’s asses,” Newsom said, before delivering the supposed kill-shot: “The only ass I care about is the one we’re going to kick on Tuesday.”
Kimmel later turned the tables on California’s famously coiffed governor.
After Newsom accused Trump of having his head “in the sand, soaked by oil” over climate change, the comedian pounced.
“When you say he’s got his head in the sand soaked with oil, is that how you do your hair each day?” Kimmel cracked.
“I walked right into that,” Newsom conceded.
Kimmel piled on with another hair-gel joke, prompting an exasperated “Jesus” from Newsom, who frequently invokes his Irish Catholic upbringing.
Despite the ribbing, Kimmel ended the friendly interview by thanking Newsom for his service — and telling him to apologize to his children on the public’s behalf.
