CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — West Virginia more than doubled its voter turnout from the general to primary elections in 2024.
With officials results from all 55 counties, the Secretary of State’s Office said Wednesday that the 2024 General Election was “one for the record books” in West Virginia. More than 63% of West Virginians voted, making it the highest voter turnout in the state since John F. Kennedy was elected in 1960 and more than double the turnout of the 2024 Primary Election.
According to a press release, a total of 770,587 West Virginians cast their ballots: 418,850 in person on Election Day, 310,878 by early voting, and 24,404 by absentee ballot.
Counties with the highest voter turnout were Grant (73.38%), Preston (72.46%), Wirt (71.30%) and Tucker (71.14%). The only counties with less than 50% voter turnout were McDowell and Mingo counties. Voter turnout numbers for all counties are available online here.

“West Virginia’s 2024 General Election is one for the record books,” Secretary of State Mac Warner said in the release. “Our clerks, our poll workers, the candidates and the voters themselves all had key roles in the election and the election process. Confidence in West Virginia’s elections is at an all-time high and will continue to grow as we work together to keep free, fair, honest, and transparent elections.”
In addition to a historical number of voters, West Virginia also saw high candidate participation, Warner said, with more than 1,700 people from five parties listed on ballots across the state, from presidential to county races.
