Former Vice President Mike Pence, who was Donald Trump’s running mate in 2016 and 2020, congratulated Trump on his 2024 presidential election victory in a post on Pence’s X account Wednesday.
In the post, Pence also congratulated Vice President-Elect JD Vance, the U.S. senator from Ohio, and Republicans in the U.S. House and Senate that won elections on Tuesday.
“We will continue to pray for all those in authority and urge every American to join us in praying for our incoming President, Vice President and elected officials at every level,” Pence wrote in the post.

The simple congratulatory message from Pence follows criticism the former vice president had for Trump during the 2024 election cycle, where Pence launched and ended his own campaign for the White House and publicly stated he could not “in good conscience” support Trump’s reelection bid.
But the split between Pence and Trump dates back to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol when Pence refused to block the certification of the 2020 presidential election results, which Pence said he did not have the authority to do.
Pence, through his political organization Advancing American Freedom, this summer was also critical of the current Republican Party’s platform, which he said moved away from “pro-life principles.” But the group campaigned ahead of the election to preserve the Trump-Pence administration’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.
Pence was the governor of Indiana from 2013 to 2016. He now lives in Carmel.
