There is a notion out there that the Giants “should not let John Harbaugh out of the building” during his expected arrival in the coming days to interview for the vacant head coaching position. If only it were that simple.

Does anyone actually expect someone with Harbaugh’s stature and options would jump at an offer without seeing what else is out there?

There are seven openings around the NFL, though one of them can be discounted right away for Harbaugh. He is not going back to the Ravens, who fired him Tuesday after 18 years in Baltimore. That leaves six possible destinations — with possibly more to follow. The Steelers face the Texans in an AFC Wild Card playoff game Monday night, and there is speculation if the Steelers do not win, Mike Tomlin could be let go after 19 years in Pittsburgh. The Packers face the Bears on Saturday night in an NFC Wild Card game, and if the Packers lose, Mike LaFleur could be out after seven years in Green Bay.

There are also the more remote possibilities — that the Bills would move on from Sean McDermott and the Eagles would move on from Super Bowl winner Nick Sirianni should their teams be one-and-done playoff participants this weekend. That could create one or two more openings and put attractive candidates such as McDermott and/or Sirianni on the market.
