The 2024 November general election is underway.

All eyes are on the presidential race between Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump. This is, of course, the big one, the one consuming almost everyone’s attention nationwide, with Harris taking over as her party’s nominee this summer and facing Trump. Harris is the first Black woman and first woman of South Asian descent to be a major party’s presidential nominee. Trump, meanwhile, is representing his party for the third presidential election in a row. Expect this to be a close one, with vote counting to stretch beyond Election Day itself and Michigan — along with Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania (and maybe even North Carolina) — will play an oversized role in the outcome.

We are tracking all the votes as they come in, as both candidates vie for the 270 electoral votes needed to be elected the 47th President of the United States. Whoever wins Michigan will win all the state’s 15 electoral votes, which are considered critical to winning the election. Trump won Michigan in 2016 en route to the presidency.

When will we know full election results?

When the polls close at 8 p.m. local time, election officials can begin reporting out unofficial election results. While results will start pouring in when the polls close, the outcome of any race may not be clear for awhile. It depends on how close the race is and how many voters return their absentee ballots on Election Day. Absentee ballots take longer to process than ballots cast in-person due to the additional steps involved after a voter returns their absentee ballot to verify and log the ballot, and then prepare it for tabulation.

In 2020, the Associated Press — which tracks races across the U.S. — wasn’t able to call President Joe Biden as winning Michigan until 5:56 p.m. ET Wednesday, the day after the Nov. 3, 2020 election. The AP has called races before all of the votes are counted based on an analysis of the votes that have already been reported and other election data. The Free Press relies on the AP’s calls.
