The WNBA has released a statement following its social media blunder in sharing a video about a bet between Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers for the result of the Dream-Wings game Wednesday night.
“While the social media post was intended to be lighthearted, WNBA players are well aware of the league’s policies prohibiting betting on WNBA games and receive training every year reinforcing those policies,” the league’s statement read. “We recognized that the post missed the mark, removed it shortly after it was published, and addressed the matter internally. We will also use this as an opportunity to reemphasize with the players involved that conversations about wagering on WNBA games, even when intended as a joke, can have negative consequences.”
No punishment has been issued for either Reese or Bueckers, according to a league source.
During the league’s All-Star weekend, the two agreed to hand over $400 to the other if their respective teams lost their Wednesday clash in the teams’ first games after the break.
“Yeah I’ll be requesting my Apple Pay after this,” Reese said Wednesday following the Dream’s 82-81 win over Dallas.
The WNBA posted and deleted a video of Reese and Bueckers discussing the bet at an All-Star weekend practice.
It’s a violation for players to wager money on games, per the WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement.
In the video, Reese held a wad of $100 bills while saying: “I know y’all gonna lose … but if y’all win, you get the $400.”
“You owe me $400 [if the Dream beat the Wings],” she added.
In a separate clip of the video, Bueckers, with a laugh, said she would “stand on” the bet while she walked the tunnel before Wednesday’s game.
Both Reese and Bueckers put on a show Wednesday night.
The Dream forward and three-time All-Star recorded a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds, her 18th time accomplishing the feat this season.
Bueckers, the 2025 Rookie of the Year, scored 16 points and tallied six assists and one steal.
The Dream (17-10) will host Seattle on Friday night, while the Wings (18-10) travel to Washington.
