Brock Rechsteiner, the son of WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner, didn’t make the cut for the Saints roster.
The team opted to waive the wide receiver on Sunday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.football reported.
Rechsteiner is serving a six-game suspension to start the season. The reason behind the suspension remains unclear.
He can still be named to any team’s practice squad while under the ban.
The undrafted rookie, a product of Jacksonville State, had his chances of making the roster increase due to Bryan Bresee’s season-ending knee injury and former Patriots receiver Ja’Lynn Polk’s sudden retirement at just 24 years old.
Rechsteiner previously hinted at following his father’s path if the NFL did not work out.
“I work out with [WWE star Bron Breakker] all the time back home. I go fishing with him a lot because he moved back to Georgia,” he told WDSU-TV in May. “He has really convinced me to, once I’m done playing football, to get into the wrestling business.
“I want to play football for as long as I can, give it the best shot I can, but once I’m done playing football, I’ll get into it, for sure. I’ll be getting into WWE.”
The 24-year-old was the cause of some uproar during training camp at a joint practice with the Cowboys this month.
Multiple fights broke out between the teams at the practice in Oxnard, Calif., including Cowboys linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku throwing punches that resulted in his dismissal from practice.
Rechsteiner took after his dad in putting Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson on the ground. Dallas’ Caelen Carson also was seen throwing punches but remained at the practice.
Rechsteiner played four seasons at Jacksonville State and wrapped up his career with 52 receptions for 630 yards and seven touchdowns across 35 games.
He played in the Saints’ 34-0 preseason loss to the Rams and had one reception for five yards.
