Northeast Wisconsin High School Sports Awards

The Xavier girls volleyball team and the Kaukauna boys wrestling team were named the teams of the year during Thursday’s at the Northeast Wisconsin High School Sports Awards show.

The event, presented by Festival Foods, was held at the Lambeau Field Atrium in Green Bay.

In all, 34 awards were handed out at the show, which honored athletes, coaches and teams from our 10 USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin markets.

Xavier volleyball won the girls team of the year award after it captured the WIAA Division 2 state championship with a three-set victory over McFarland. The Hawks finished the season with a 45-3 record, with their only three losses coming against Division 1 opponents.

It was the second consecutive state championship for Xavier, which also finished undefeated and won the Bay Conference championship under the guidance of head coach Luke Herriges.

Kaukauna wrestling won the boys team of the year award. Under the guidance of Hall of Fame head coach Jeff Matczak, the Ghosts won the WIAA state title with a victory over Wisconsin Rapids in the Division 1 championship match.

It was the fourth Division 1 state title in a row for the Ghosts and their eighth in the last 11 seasons. The Ghosts also sent seven wrestlers to the individual state tournament this season, including one state champion.

Kaukauna also finished undefeated during the regular season with a 20-0 record in dual meets and won the Fox Valley Association championship for the 19th season in a row.

The Northeast Wisconsin High School Sports Awards show is part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country. The show was produced with the support of Prevea Health and Cellcom.

The show recognized prep athletes, coaches and teams in the Appleton, Fond du Lac, Green Bay, Manitowoc, Marshfield, Oshkosh, Sheboygan, Stevens Point, Wausau and Wisconsin Rapids markets for their achievements during the 2023-24 school year.
