If you’re looking to visit a Western North Carolina winery, Southern Living writers have a few suggestions.
Established in 1966, Southern Living aims to “celebrate the food, homes and places that define our region.” The magazine has recognized WNC locations plenty of times, including among a recent round of studies honoring the “South’s Best.”
Another recent piece explored wineries in the Tar Heel state – and several of Southern Living’s choices were perfect day trip locations for Asheville residents.
Here’s what to know about the locations, plus the full list and more.

Addison Farms Vineyard
Addison Farm Vineyards make their wine from grapes grown locally on their farm in Leicester without dangerous additives.
A “petite family-owned vineyard,” Addison Farms Vineyard originally served as a tobacco farm. The current owner, Jeff Frisbee, who owns the farm with his wife, Dianne, is the fourth generation in his family to live and work on the property.
Southern Living writers suggest the farm’s winemaker’s tasting experience and tours, as well as “exclusive perk,” Addison Farms Vineyard’s wine club limited to 50 members who receive two half-cases of wine annually.

Marked Tree Vineyard
Marked Tree Vineyard produces award-winning wine.
About 30 minutes south of Asheville in Flat Rock, Marked Tree Vineyard opened in 2015 and “encourages others to sip and savor a new experience seven days a week.
Writers loved the vineyard’s events and offerings including tours and wine festivals as well as more intimate vintner gatherings. The list also mentioned the broad range of wines offered.
“Whether you want to slowly sip on a Petit Verdot or skip dessert and order rosé instead, this winery has something for every palate,” Southern Living writers said.

Stone Ashe Vineyards
Stone Ashe Vineyard is a locally owned winery and vineyard in Hendersonville.
Stone Ashe Vineyards, located in Hendersonville, aims replicate the feel of Bordeaux, France. Former dentists-turned-owners Craig and Tina Little started with a goal to find a location in N.C. that replicated climate, soil and steep slopes found in France.
Southern Living writers appreciated the French-inspired atmosphere cultivated and “top-notch” wines, mentioning the Coppedge Hill red blend in particular. The “true highlight” to writers, however, was the tasting room with floor-to-ceiling windows.
