4 Underrated Netflix Movies You Need to Watch in December 2025: ‘Eden’ and More

It may be hard to believe, but there are only two weeks left in 2025 to watch as many movies as you can.

The good news is that Netflix is adding some really terrific films near the end of the month to keep things fresh heading into 2026.

To help you find the best options, the Watch With Us team has selected four underrated Netflix movies you need to watch in December 2025.

Just be sure to pace yourselves. These films are meant to be enjoyed at your leisure.

‘Brightburn’ (2019)

Superman’s origin almost always starts with a child from another world crashing to Earth in an alien ship before being adopted by a loving family in the American Midwest who teach him how to be human and how to be a hero. Brightburn incorporates a lot of those elements in its story, as Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunn) is taken in by Kyle (David Denman) and Tori Breyer (Elizabeth Banks). They know some of the truth about Brandon’s alien origins, but they try to keep it from him as long as possible.

Once Brandon’s powers awaken, he becomes less and less human by the day. When he has the powers of a god, there’s nothing anyone can do or say to stop Brandon from doing whatever he wants. Kyle and Tori haven’t raised Earth’s greatest hero, but he might become the greatest threat the world has ever known if they don’t take measures to stop him while they still can.

Brightburn is streaming on Netflix.

‘What Lies Beneath’ (2000)

Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford are an intriguing on-screen pair in the supernatural thriller What Lies Beneath. They play a couple, Norman (Ford) and Claire Spencer (Pfeiffer), whose marriage is under a great deal of strain following her recovery from a car accident. There are unspoken secrets between Claire and her husband that start to boil over when she begins having visions of a dead woman who greatly resembles her.

Claire initially believes that the ghost haunting her days and nights is a neighbor’s murdered wife. But the truth hits a lot closer to home for both Claire and Norman. This is one secret that just might be the death of both of them, regardless of whether they can repair the bond they once shared.

What Lies Beneath is streaming on Netflix.

‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’ (2022)

This film is primarily for fans of the hit British series Downton Abbey, but newcomers should still be able to follow the story of Downton Abbey: A New Era. There are a lot of characters and subplots to keep track of, but there are really two big stories in the film. Downton Abbey is being used as a set for a silent film, with Lady Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery) overseeing the chaos that the film’s stars and director leave in their wake.

Meanwhile, most of the Crawley family takes a trip to France about an inheritance that quickly turns ugly. It’s a particularly trying time for Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) as he learns a secret that may cost him his place in the family at the same time that his wife, Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), is facing a potentially fatal illness. This film is also the last appearance of the late Maggie Smith as Violet Crawley, and it gives her the sendoff she deserves.

Downton Abbey: A New Era will stream on Netflix on December 24.

‘Eden’ (2024)

Ron Howard‘s Eden is based on the true stories of German settlers who attempted to build a new colony for themselves on a remote island in the Galápagos Islands. Dr. Friedrich Ritter (Jude Law) and Dore Strauch (Vanessa Kirby) tried to get away from the aspects of their country that disturbed them, and they might have pulled it off if they had been left to themselves. Even the second family that arrives, led by Heinz (Daniel Brühl) and Margret Wittmer (Sydney Sweeney), might have what it takes to survive on the island.

However, things start falling apart when Baroness Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn (Ana de Armas) and her entourage show up. The Baroness wants to remake the island in her image and turn it into a luxury resort. She also has a gift for inspiring anger from her fellow colonists. The Baroness may cause a lot of conflict, but she’s only a symptom of a larger problem. And it may simply be beyond anyone’s ability to fix before this paradise is lost.

Eden will stream on Netflix on December 23.
