The 49ers orchestrated a blockbuster trade ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
San Francisco landed defensive lineman DeForest Buckner in a deal with the Colts at the end of October, but the 49ers may not be done on the trade block.
On The Pivot Podcast, NFL insider Jordan Schultz discussed what fans can expect ahead of the trade deadline and he explained why San Francisco’s front office could have another trick up its sleeve.
“Last week, I talked about San Francisco and Chicago. Those were two teams that I thought would be really active. Now, the Bears landed [Jeffery] Simmons in a blockbuster. San Francisco got [DeForest] Buckner. So we were in on that,” Schultz said.
“But Ryan, I don’t think either team is done. I think the 49ers are still looking for a receiver and a pass rusher. I wouldn’t rule out another move for either team.
“There’s a lot of Khalil Mack buzz for both clubs. The Jets have made it clear they’re not looking to trade their stars, including Garrett Wilson. But there has been some curiosity around Breece Hall, so we’ll see what happens there.”
While running back is not a need for the Niners with Christian McCaffrey in place, wide receiver has been a glaring need.
“But the biggest name around the league that people are really starting to get curious about is George Pickens in Dallas,” Schultz said. “He’s playing on the franchise tag. He has not been utilized the same way as last year.”
Last season, Pickens earned his first Pro Bowl nod, reeling in 93 passes for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns. This year, he has just 39 catches for just over 500 yards and two trips to the end zone.
All while the Cowboys’ season fades into oblivion.
San Fransisco has been decimated by injury at the receiver position. Mike Evans is expected back, as are rookie De’Zhaun Stribling and Deebo Samuel. But those are still unanswered questions. Never mind losing Christian Kirk and Ricky Pearsall for the season already.
The 49ers have reached the Super Bowl in recent years without the right pieces, but were unable to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Perhaps San Francisco learns from history and remains aggressive on the trade market until the Nov. 10 deadline.
