What happens after you die? For Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze), not much — after dying from a botched robbery, he’s stuck haunting his fiancée, Molly Jensen (Demi Moore), who can’t see or hear him. The only one who can is Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg), a quack psychic who suddenly discovers she’s the real deal — she can hear Sam! He wants her to help him find out why he was murdered, but their investigation proves to be too thorough — the killers don’t want to be caught, and they’ll do anything to preserve their freedom. Will Sam’s curiosity endanger those closest to him?
Ghost is syrupy, New Age hokum, but it works. Both a supernatural thriller and a love story, Ghost balances those two different genres well, resulting in an entertaining movie that will make you cry more than think. What makes the movie so special is Goldberg, who steals every scene she’s in as the frequently exasperated Oda Mae. She can’t believe this annoying white guy is bugging her, but when she comes around and becomes a believer, you will, too.
