In a press release, the Gotham Film & Media Institute called its annual awards ceremony the “start of the annual awards season.” In terms of the awards calendar, that’s certainly true: the Gotham Awards take place on December 2, before even some major critics groups like the New York Film Critics Circle make their own choices.

Nominees for the Gotham Awards, now in its 34th year, “are selected by committees of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators.” To choose the winners, “Separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and others directly involved in making films will determine the final Gotham Award recipients.”

The juried nature of its categories – and the fact that there are several small juries overall – tends to keep things interesting at the Gotham Awards, which nominally value independent films over high-profile studio fare. Last year, for instance, the best feature lineup included eventual winner “Past Lives” as well as “Passages,” “Reality,” “Showing Up,” and “A Thousand and One.” The best performer category – which is gender-neutral and combines both actors and actresses into one list of nominees – found room for eventual Oscar nominee Jeffrey Wright for “American Fiction” but category winner Lily Gladstone for her indie film “The Unknown Country” and not her Oscar-nominated performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

This year’s Gotham Awards nominations will come in the following categories:

  • Breakthrough Performer

  • Outstanding Supporting Performance

  • Outstanding Lead Performance

  • Breakthough Director

  • Best Screenplay

  • Best Director

  • Best Documentary Feature

  • Best International Feature

  • Best Feature

In addition to its independent-minded winners, the Gotham Awards also pay tribute to major mainstream titles with big awards season aspirations. Last year, “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Maestro” received tribute awards.

This year so far, the Gothams have announced two special designations for awards contenders. Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson” will receive the 2024 Gotham Awards Ensemble Tribute. “Dune: Part Two” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has been picked to receive The Gotham Director Tribute.
