With less than a week to go in the US presidential election race, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are making their final pitches to voters, with both set to appear in battleground North Carolina on Wednesday.

The Democratic presidential nominee has been forced to respond to Joe Biden inadvertently whipping up a conservative media storm by seemingly calling Trump’s supporters “garbage” in response to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s already-notorious Madison Square Garden joke about Puerto Rico.

“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters – his – his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American,” the president told Latinos on a Zoom call on Tuesday.

Harris told reporters on Wednesday that she “strongly” disagrees with any criticism of the public based on their voting intentions.

The Democrat delivered her “closing argument” at the Ellipse in Washington DC last night, speaking on the very same spot from which Trump told his supporters to “fight like hell” on January 6 2021.

She urged Americans to finally “turn the page” on the “division, chaos and mutual distrust” of the Trump era, characterising her opponent as a cynical opportunist vulnerable to the influence of malign actors at home and abroad.

Trump tells supporters that he is ‘not Hitler’

18:05 , Mike Bedigan

At his rally in North Carolina, Trump once again reminded his supporters that he was “not Hitler.”

The former president came under fire following reports he had once made comments praising the German dictator. Comparisons were also drawn between his recent rally in New York’s Madison Square Garden, the site of a Nazi rally in 1939.

“They’ve called me Hitler,” Trump said. “Many years ago I had a father, he was a great guy, a strong guy… he always used to tell me ‘never use the word Nazi, never use the word Hitler.

“Now we’re called Nazis and I’m called Hitler, I’m not Hitler!”

Trump responds to Biden calling his ‘high quality’ supporters ‘garbage’

17:55 , Mike Bedigan

Donald Trump addressed remarks made by Joe Biden in which the president appeared to refer to Trump supporters at “garbage.”

The former president said his fans were “far higher quality” than those of the Democrats.

“This week Kamala Harris has been comparing her political opponents to the evil mass murderers in history and now, on a call for her campaign last night, Joe Biden finally said what he and Kamala really think of our supporters,” he said.

“He called them garbage and they mean it… even though, without question, my supporters are far higher quality than Crooke Joe or Lyin Kamala.”

He added: “My response to Joe and Kamla is very simple: You can’t lead america if you don’t love Americans, you just cant. And you can’t be president if you hate the American people…

“They’ve treated you like garbage, the truth is they’ve treated our whole country like garbage whether they’ve meant to or not.”

Trump calls Harris ‘low-IQ individual’ but claims he is ‘very nice’ to her

17:45 , Mike Bedigan

Moments after Kamala Harris finished her remarks, Donald Trump began his own rally in North Carolina, in Rocky Mount.

The former president claimed that he was “very nice” to the Democrats, moments after referring to his Democratic rival as a “low-IQ individual.”

“I will bring back a thing called The American Dream, isn’t that nice? Because we hadn’t had that in a long time,” he said.

“Our country will be bigger, better, bolder, richer, safer, and strongner than ever before.”

He continued: “Kamala Harris, a low-IQ individual, is running a campaign of hate, anger and retribution. See I’m very nice to them, they’re not very nice to me.”

Harris’ plans were “the plans of a simpleton” he later added.

Trump later laughed when an audience member shouted that Harris was “an idiot” but joked “I didn’t say it… In fact, sir I’d like to admonish you that way the press can’t get me.”

Harris says will people who disagree with her a ‘seat at the table’

17:20 , Mike Bedigan

Kamala Harris told supporters in North Carolina that, unlike her Republican rival, she would work with those who have conflicting views.

“Unlike Donald Trump, I don’t believe that people who disagree with me are the enemy,” she said. “He wants to put them in jail. I’ll give them a seat at the table.”

She added: “We are here together because we love our country, and when you love something you fight for it.”

Harris repeats promise to ‘turn the page’ on Donald Trump

17:10 , Mike Bedigan

At a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, Kamala Harris repeated her promise to “turn the page” on Donald Trump.

After taking to the stage, the vice president went back over many of the points made in her “closing argument speech” in Washington DC on Tuesday night.

She added it was time to “turn the page on a decade of Donald Trump, who has been trying to keep us divided and afraid of each other.” “That is not who we are,” Harris said.

“It is time for a new chapter where we stop with the pointing fingers at each other – let us lock arms with each other… it is time for a new generation of leadership in America.”

Similar to her DC speech, she said that Trump was “obsessed with revenge” and after “unchecked power.”

Supreme Court allows Virginia to resume voter roll purge

16:40 , Mike Bedigan

The US Supreme Court’s conservative majority moved on Wednesday to allow Virginia to resume its purge of voter registrations that the state says is aimed at stopping people who are not American citizens from voting.

The high court, over the dissents of its three liberal justices, granted an emergency appeal from Virginia’s Republican administration led by Governor Glenn Youngkin.

The court provided no reason for its action, which is typical in emergency appeals.

The justices acted on Virginia’s appeal after a federal judge found that the state illegally purged more than 1,600 voter registrations in the past two months.

A federal appeals court had previously allowed the judge’s order to remain in effect.

Such voting is rare in American elections, but the spectre of immigrants voting illegally has been a main part of the political messaging this year from Trump and other Republicans.

Trump campaign sues over ‘voter suppression’ in Pennsylvania

16:10 , Joe Sommerlad

The Republican ticket has announced it is suing Bucks County in the crucial swing state, alleging its officials have been “turning away voters” queuing outside election offices hoping to apply for mail-in ballots before they close at 5pm, which, the campaign points out, would be against the law if true.

“Yesterday, Kamala delivered a speech of falsehoods in Washington, DC claiming Republicans are a threat to democracy – while her allies in battleground Pennsylvania are actively turning away voters,” the Trump-Vance say in their email.

“This is against the law. This is voter suppression from the left. We will fight for every legal vote in Pennsylvania. Go vote, and stay in line!”

Seven states will decide the election. They’re all too close to call

14:50 , Joe Sommerlad

With just one week until the election, we are no closer to knowing whether Trump or Harris will be the next president of the United States.

But that question will ultimately be answered by voters in a handful of battleground states, whose 93 electoral college votes will push either candidate over the line.

In each of these seven states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — neither Harris nor Trump has established a secure lead, with polling averages showing that the candidates are within two points of each other.

This means that nearly 100 Electoral College votes are ripe for the taking and will not be secure until next week.

Republicans will ‘go big’ in Trump’s first 100 days and ‘take a blowtorch’ to federal agencies, says Speaker Johnson

14:10 , Joe Sommerlad

In a video obtained by NBC News, House Speaker Mike Johnson can be seen addressing an event in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Monday promising that his side will “take a blowtorch” to federal agencies in the first 100 days of a Donald Trump presidency.

“Healthcare reform’s going to be a big part of the agenda,” Johnson tells his audience.

“When I say we’re going to have a very aggressive first 100 days agenda, we got a lot of things still on the table.”

Asked if that would mean no Obamacare, Johnson rolled his eyes and answered: “No Obamacare. The ACA is so deeply ingrained, we need massive reform to make this work, and we got a lot of ideas on how to do that.”

This is what Harris-Walz spokesperson Sarafina Chitika had to say in response:

“Healthcare is on the ballot this November. Speaker Mike Johnson is making it clear – if Donald Trump wins, he and his Project 2025 allies in Congress will make sure there is ‘no Obamacare.’

“That means higher healthcare costs for millions of families and ripping away protections from Americans with pre-existing conditions like diabetes, asthma, or cancer.

“Voters see Trump’s ‘concepts of a plan’ for what they are: Ending the Affordable Care Act, jacking up prices, and leaving millions of Americans without the care they need.”

Tim Walz tells Good Morning America: ‘We’re winning this thing’

13:30 , Joe Sommerlad

Harris’s running mate was on the breakfast show a little while ago talking to George Stephanopoulos and said of her Ellipse speech last night: “The vice president’s rhetoric is the rhetoric that the president of the United States gives. One that understands we’re all in this together. One that welcomes robust debate about the issues.”

Asked about Joe Biden’s “garbage” blunder, Walz said: “The president has clarified his remarks. Let’s be very clear, the vice president and I have made it absolutely clear that we want everyone as a part of this. Donald Trump’s divisive rhetoric is what needs to end.”

On their ticket’s supposed struggle to attract male voters, he said: “I think folks are still undecided. We go again back to those kitchen table issues. Men care about the lives of the women they love in their lives and they do care about the issue of reproductive care.

“They also want to make sure manufacturing jobs are coming back to Michigan. They want to make sure their kids are safe in schools from gun violence. Men are no different than women in that they want to live safe and secure lives. They want an opportunity to thrive.”

Asked how optimistic he was about next Tuesday, Walz declared: “We’re winning this thing… There’s energy out there. People are ready.

“There will be a clear result. My biggest concern is that Donald Trump has brought pessimism to folks. That folks don’t believe that their votes don’t matter. Those votes do matter.”

Allan Lichtman, the American political historian is known as the “Nostradamus” of elections because he has successfully predicted the last nine out of 10 presidential races since 1984, has revealed why he believes there is “more election anxiety this year” than ever before.

In a new episode on his YouTube channel, marking one week to go until voters elect either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump as the next president, Lichtman spoke of the “election anxiety” this time around.

“There was more election anxiety this year than I’ve ever seen, and I go back to Kennedy – Nixon in 1960,” Lichtman said.

“I’ve never seen this kind of election anxiety,” he added.

“A lot of people believe the future of the country is on the line here, and the democracy of America could be a thing of the past. I don’t think that’s an illegitimate fear.

“I’m so worried about the future of our election, you know, I think I’ve said this before – democracy is precious but like all precious things, it can be destroyed.”

  • Donald Trump will be in Rocky Mount in the same state and then Green Bay, Wisconsin, with retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre joining him for the latter event.

  • JD Vance, his running mate, will be taking part in a town hall in Bedford, Pennsylvania, in the company of reformed Democrat Tulsi Gabbard.

  • As for their surrogates, Bill Clinton will be in Muskegon Heights, Michigan, Doug Emhoff and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be in Las Vegas and Vivek Ramawamy will be stumping for Trump in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Trump tries to brush off racist Puerto Rico joke in latest Sean Hannity interview

10:10 , Joe Sommerlad

The Republican nominee’s other big offering yesterday was an exclusive interview with Hannity on Fox News, apparently recorded in a dank dungeon either to set the mood for Halloween or to conceal Trump badly overdoing the bronzer earlier in the day, the candidate looking at his most beaming orange on stage in Pennsylvania.

Our man claimed to know nothing about the Hinchcliffe controversy (as he always does whenever a crony gets in trouble), said that people from Puerto Rico routinely hug and kiss him in the street and unwisely recalled his post-hurricane visit to the territory in October 2017 when he made light of the locals’ suffering by tossing packets of paper towels around like basketballs.

He also pushed his alarmist school sex change conspiracy theory (again, not happening), claimed no one would notice Elon Musk gutting the federal government and scaremongered over urban crime.

Donald Trump was also speaking last night, following up his flushed and exhausted appearance at a “low energy” press conference at Mar-a-Lago with outings in Drexel Hill and then Allentown in pivotal Pennsylvania.

The Republican’s set list has all gotten very familiar and repetitive by this point but he assured the crowd Democrats have “already started cheating” the vote and had them booing Beyonce within minutes.

He went on to take credit for undermining the public’s faith in the Fourth Estate, trashed trans rights, called America “a garbage can” (again), claimed migrants have taken over Times Square in NYC (they have not), lied about the persecution of Catholics and talked of locking people up for exercising their right to free speech.

There was also some pretty outrageous Puerto Rico-washing in the hope of clawing back some of the Latino votes Tony Hinchcliffe blew for him.

Joe Biden accused of calling MAGA supporters ‘garbage’ – but did he actually say it?

09:20 , Joe Sommerlad

Unfortunately, Harris’s triumphant moment looks like being overshadowed by the president, who has inadvertently whipped up a conservative media storm after seemingly calling Trump’s supporters “garbage” in response to Tony Hinchcliffe’s already-notorious Madison Square Garden joke about Puerto Rico.

Speaking on a Zoom call with Latino voters yesterday, Biden stumbled over a few words as he gave a response to the the comedian calling the US territory a “floating island of garbage”.

Per the White House transcript, he said: “And just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a ‘floating island of garbage.’ Well let me tell you something. I don’t – I – I don’t know the Puerto Rican that – they I know –or a Puerto Rico, where I’m fr- – in my home state of Delaware, they [are] good decent honorable people.

“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters – his – his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.”

The White House maintains Biden’s remarks have since been misconstrued and taken out of context, which, of course, did not stop him having to apologize on social media or the Trump campaign from pouncing, eager to change a narrative that has potentially cost it the support of America’s Latinos.

Here’s more from Oliver O’Connell on a gaffe the Trump campaign is keen to portray as Biden’s “basket of deplorables” moment.

Kamala Harris urges Americans to ‘turn the page’ on ‘divisive’ Trump as she delivers closing argument in DC

09:00 , Joe Sommerlad

Good morning!

Let’s start with a look back at the Democratic presidential nominee’s speech at the Ellipse in Washington DC last night, speaking on the very same spot from which Donald Trump told his supporters to “fight like hell” on January 6 2021, leading to the deadly assault on the US Capitol.

Harris urged Americans to finally “turn the page” on the “division, chaos and mutual distrust” of the Trump era, characterising her opponent as a cynical opportunist vulnerable to the influence of malign actors at home and abroad and offered herself as a sunny alternative.

“The United States of America is the greatest idea humanity ever devised,” she told her (huge) audience to rapturous applause, closing an address that went pretty much perfectly, at least from her campaign’s point of view.

This was Trump’s notably rather short – and vague – rebuttal on Truth Social.

The White House claims that this is their transcript of Biden’s comments: “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American.”

White House spokesman Andrew Bates: “The President referred to the hateful rhetoric at the Madison Square Garden rally as ‘garbage.’”

As Election Day nears, Donald Trump has shared false and exaggerated claims about the integrity of the vote in the key swing state of Pennsylvania.

In a Truth Social post on Monday evening, Trump claimed multiple counties in Pennsylvania were experiencing major potential fraud, outpacing the facts on the ground.

Josh Marcus reports.

Trump has a long history of being blatantly offensive. Was a joke at his MSG rally finally too far?

Donald Trump’s Sunday rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City was meant to be a show of strength for the former president ahead of election week.

But the event became a disaster before Trump took to the stage. Early-in-the-night comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s joke: “There’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” set off a cascade of negative reactions that rapidly spun out of control.

Alex Woodward examines how, despite Trump’s long history of blatantly offensive remarks, this joke might have been one step too far:

Trump is desperately trying to fix his Puerto Rico crisis. It isn’t going well

Full story: Harris urges Americans to ‘turn the page’ on ‘divisive’ Trump

With one week remaining until the 2024 election, Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday urged Americans to “turn the page” from Donald Trump, calling the ex-president “unstable,” “obsessed with revenge,” and not at all focused on their needs as she stood within sight of the White House to make her campaign’s “closing argument” against the ex-president.

Standing on a stage at the Ellipse, where Trump exhorted a riotous mob of his supporters to attack the Capitol nearly four years ago, Harris noted what Trump had done in the very place where she was standing and reminded the crowd of roughly 75,000 supporters that Trump was “the person who stood at this very spot nearly four years ago, and sent an armed mob to the United States Capitol to overturn the will of the people in a free and fair election — an election that he knew he lost.”

Andrew Feinberg reports for The Independent from Washington, DC.

Harris: ‘We are not a vessel for the schemes of wannabe dictators’

“We are not a vessel for the schemes of wannabe dictators. The United States of America is the greatest idea humanity ever devised.”

I pledge to listen to experts, to those who will be impacted by the decisions I make, and to people who disagree with me. Unlike Donald Trump, I don’t believe people who disagree with me are the enemy. He wants to put them in jail. I’ll give them a seat at the table.
