Emmy Award winner and Oscar nominee Colman Domingo will receive the Spotlight Award, Actor, for his performance in “Sing Sing” at the Palm Springs International Film Awards.
The Film Awards will take place on Jan. 3, 2025, at the Palm Springs Convention Center, with the festival running Jan. 2-13, 2025.
In the A24 film “Sing Sing,” Divine G (Domingo), imprisoned at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theater group alongside other incarcerated men, including wary newcomer Divine Eye (Clarence Maclin). This true story of resilience, humanity and the transformative power of art features an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors. The film is directed by Greg Kwedar, and Domingo also serves as executive producer.
This is the second year in a role that Domingo will receive the Spotlight Award, Actor. He received the award at the 2024 Film Awards ceremony for his role in “Rustin.”
“We are so thrilled to honor the remarkable talent of Colman Domingo at the Palm Springs International Film Awards for the second year in a row. In ‘Sing Sing,’ Colman Domingo delivers another outstanding performance based on the true story of the wrongfully convicted Divine G, who finds purpose in prison through stage acting,” Festival Chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi said in a statement. “For this incredibly raw and captivating performance, it is our honor to present the Spotlight Award, Actor to Colman Domingo.”
Past recipients of the Spotlight Award, Actor include Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo,” Brendan Fraser for “The Whale” and Andrew Garfield for “Hacksaw Ridge.” All three, as well as Domingo for “Rustin,” went on to receive Academy Award nominations for best actor, with Fraser winning the award.
Domingo has worked in film, television and theater for three decades and has made a splash in the entertainment world. He has been nominated for a number of awards, including an Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globes, SAG, Tony, Critics Choice, Independent Spirit, Gotham, Lawrence Olivier, Drama Desk and Drama League. He has won an Emmy, AAFCA, NAACP Image and others.
Some of his most prominent roles include “Rustin,” “The Color Purple,” “Euphoria,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Zola,” “Selma,” “Candyman,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Lucy in the Sky,” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “Lincoln.”
Domingo and his husband, Raul Domingo, have produced a myriad of work under their Edith Productions banner, including the horror film “It’s What Inside,” which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and sold to Netflix. He has also co-produced the Pulitzer Prize-winning and Tony-nominated play “Fat Ham.”
His upcoming projects include the limited series “The Madness” for Netflix on Nov. 28; Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic called “Michael,” in which he will play patriarch Joe Jackson; and the Tina Fey comedy “The Four Seasons.”
Domingo joins this year’s previously announced honoree “Emilia Pérez” (Vanguard Award).
