Polls have officially closed in Ohio for the 2024 presidential election.
With its 17 Electoral College votes this year, Ohio’s results can ultimately play a big role in deciding the next President of the United States.
So who won the state in 2020, during the last presidential election?
Who won Ohio in 2020?
Trump clinched Ohio in the 2020 election, receiving 3,154,834 votes from Ohioans as opposed to President Joe Biden’s 2,679,165.
The former Republican president received the 18 electoral votes that year from his Ohio victory and even made history by winning more votes in the 2020 election than any other candidate in state history, according to The Associated Press.
Trump’s more than 3.1 million votes exceeded the former record of 2,940,044 cast for former President Barack Obama in 2008.
Is Ohio a battleground state?
Ohio used to be considered a major battleground state, but that’s not really that case anymore.
Since 1960, the Buckeye State has proven to be a good presidential bellwether. However, the state’s 14 election streak of siding with the winner was broken in 2020 when the state turned red for Trump, and Biden claimed the election.
With Ohio previously flipping between presidential parties throughout elections, it appears the state has solidified itself as a dominantly red state.
