DES MOINES, Iowa — The 90th General Assembly for the Iowa Legislature already had historic margins for the Iowa GOP, and the 2024 election results have expanded those numbers.
The Iowa House Republican caucus looked to expand on a 64-36 majority over Iowa Democrats and the unofficial election results show the caucus expanded into a super majority hold of the the chamber. Winning three seats from across the aisle, Speaker of the House Pat Grassley spoke to Iowa Republicans after early results looked good for the party across the state on election night.
“How does the number 67 House Republicans sound to everybody,” said Grassley (R), District 57 from New Hartford. “That’s a pretty high number we are pretty excited about that. And I think Iowans, I feel pretty confident in saying this, House Republicans continue to represent every single county within the state and we are excited that it continues to grow.”
The threshold for a super majority is 67-33 and it was attained by the Iowa GOP. Not one single republican lawmaker that was challenged in an election lost. Over in the Iowa Senate Chamber, where a super majority already exists, was expanded upon with 35 Iowa Senate Republicans to 15 Iowa Senate Democrats.

The chair of the Iowa Democrats spoke to supporters in Des Moines on Tuesday night after election results were piling in, and the outcomes looked bleak, encouraging those to fight for the future.
“We are not done. In farming and in politics the rocks always come back in the spring,” said IDP Chair Rita Hart. “Win or lose tonight we have another election night around the corner. We have always known that in addition to hard work it’s going to take time. We need to stick together and keep going. I am so looking forward to the future with all of you. 2025 is coming and we are ready to make even better things happen.”
These numbers may change with some recounts that will occur, but the likely scenario is that the chambers are set at both of these margins. January 13, 2025 is the first day of the 91st General Assembly.
