Arguably the world’s most mysterious sandwich is making a comeback. The McDonald’s McRib.

For Texans who have been waiting to get their hands on a McRib, they will have to wait a little longer.

Currently, only restaurants in the United Kingdom and Germany have the sandwich on their menu, but U.S. fans might not have to wait much longer. The sandwich is expected to return to local McDonald’s locations before the end of this year.

Here is when the sandwich could come to the states.

When is the McRib coming to the United States?

According to a June interview from the Today Show, McDonald’s president Joe Erlinger said the McRib is “coming later this year.”

No word yet when it’s returning to McDonald’s restaurants in Texas.

According to the Topeka Capital-Journal, McDonald’s restaurants in Topeka, Kansas, are set to start offering the sandwich during the week of November 25. The McRib is anticipated to be available until January 2025.

What is in the McRib?

The McRib is a patty shaped to resemble a rack of ribs, made from pork, water, salt, dextrose, and rosemary extract. It’s served on a bun with barbecue sauce, pickles and onions, and packs 520 calories.

When was the McRib invented?

The McRib, invented by McDonald’s executive chef Rene Arend (who also created Chicken McNuggets in 1979), originated from the development of restructured meat by University of Nebraska professor Roger Mandigo for the military. The sandwich first appeared in 1981 in Kansas City, Kansas, and became available nationwide the following year.

How popular is the McRib?

According to online gaming site Spin Genie, which analyzed Google search data, the McRib, which appeared on the McDonald’s menu from 1989 to 2005, is the most popular discontinued fast food item.

From July 2023 to June 2024, the McRib received significantly more searches than its closest competitors, including Chipotle’s Carne Asada, Domino’s Brooklyn Style Pizza and Taco Bell’s Enchirito.
