After first being released theatrically in the United States on June 21, 2024, “Thelma” is now available to stream on Hulu, as of Friday, Nov. 15. Non-Hulu subscribers can buy or rent the movie for a fee on Amazon Prime.

The Magnolia Pictures comedy-drama stars June Squibb as the titular 93-year-old sassy character whose family members (played by Fred Hechinger, Clark Gregg, and Parker Posey) become more and more concerned about her wellbeing. After being scammed out of $10K, Thelma goes after the people who stole from her, with Richard Roundtree playing her trusty sidekick and Malcolm McDowell taking on the role of the villainous scammer.

Gold Derby spoke with Squibb earlier this awards season about “Thelma,” including working with Roundtree for the first time. “I said to him, ‘It’s about time!’” the actress recalled. “That’s what I said and no one knew what I was talking about, but he did. I just felt, my God, we should have known each other. We should have been introduced. We should have worked together. My birthday happened while we were shooting and he wasn’t on call that day but he came in with two dozen red roses for me. Just coming in impressed me, let alone with the red roses.” Roundtree passed away in October 2023.

Building chemistry with Hechinger, who plays her grandson Danny, was incredibly easy right from the moment they first connected. “We really dug each other,” Squibb told us. “We met each other at my apartment for lunch before we started shooting. I think we both were laughing because we were supposed to rehearse and I don’t think there was a bit of rehearsal done. We became very close. He’s one of my best friends now. He lives in New York and I live in L.A. and we see each other on the other coast all the time. If he’s out here, he always comes for lunch.”

Squibb was born on Nov. 6, 1929, and she just celebrated her 95th birthday. She received an Oscar nomination for her supporting role in the 2013 film “Nebraska” opposite Bruce Dern. That movie also brought her nominations at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, and Critics Choice Awards.
