These are the kinds of stories that used to nourish the narrative of the New York Football Giants. Sean Geier was maybe 9 when the Giants were about to open the old stadium at the Meadowlands. His family was moving to Bergen County, N.J., from Jersey City, and they were passionate Giants fans but couldn’t dream of even sniffing a seat thanks to a season ticket waiting list so long it stretched from Giants Stadium to the Yale Bowl and back.

One day, his father, Henry, sat down and wrote Wellington Mara a note.

Not long after, a most remarkable thing happened.

Mara sent Henry Geier a handwritten reply, which was nice. But he also included three tickets, which was a miracle. And for most of the next 45 years or so, the Geier family looked forward to the eight dates a year when various mixtures would gather to cheer the team in the blue. You hear stories like that a lot involving the old man.
