A potential Bill Belichick-UNC marriage is up to the legendary head coach.

ESPN reported on Wednesday that the “ball is in Belichick’s court” as school officials are “on board” with the eight-time Super Bowl champion becoming the Tar Heels’ head coach.

There are still several issues to work out, per the report, before Belichick makes the jump to North Carolina, including his salary, the school’s NIL funding and a potential role for his son Stephen, who is currently the defensive coordinator at Washington.

However, his future is expected to be decided soon.

In early December, rumors of mutual interest between Belichick and North Carolina began percolating, shocking football fans across the country.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Belichick, 72, had multiple interviews for the job including a five-hour meeting with UNC brass on Sunday.

“I’ve had the opportunity to talk to Chancellor [Lee] Roberts, and we’ve had a couple of good conversations, so we’ll see how it goes,” Belichick said on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday as part of his weekly apperance.

The Tar Heels are looking for a new head coach after firing Mack Brown after he went 6-6 this season and 44-31 in 75 games over six seasons.

Belichick, the second-winningest head coach in NFL history, has spent the 2024 season doing various media projects after splitting with the Patriots in January following 24 seasons at the helm.

After striking out in the job search last offseason, Belichick was expected to be a prominent name in this year’s coaching carousel.

There have been few whispers thus far, though, after the Jets, Bears and Saints all fired their head coaches earlier this season.

Although he has no personal ties to the school, Belichick’s father, Steve, was an assistant coach for the Tar Heels in the 1950s.
