CBS caused a stir when they announced that season 14 of Blue Bloods would be the last — especially since the cast wasn’t ready to say goodbye.

“I love the character and I certainly thought there were a lot more stories that we could tell with him,” Donnie Wahlberg, who played Detective Danny Reagan, exclusively told Us Weekly in December 2024. “I’m not saying there will be a spinoff, I’m just saying I haven’t closed the door on the character.”

Six months prior, CBS Studios president David Stapf told Deadline that they’re “taking [their] time” in terms of developing a possible spinoff. “We’ve got to get it right,” he said in July 2024.

Wahlberg, meanwhile, told Us he envisions somehow “incorporating some of the Reagans” into a new project should the opportunity arise. “It’s a legacy show and I think people still want it and they want more. And of course I’m open to that,” he added.

Abigail Hawk, who played Abigail Baker, exclusively told Us in October 2024 that “none of us wanted the show to end.” She claimed, “Every single one of us, regardless of whatever rumors were flying around, was very ready, willing and able to continue working. Most especially Tom [Selleck] and Len [Cariou] who [don’t] wanna retire.”

Blue Bloods ended its 14-season run on December 13, 2024, wrapping up the stories of New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (Selleck) and his children: Danny, Erin (Bridget Moynahan) and Jamie (Will Estes).

Something’s in the Works

Wahlberg teased the future of the show while answering questions during New Kids on the Block concert in July 2024. “Well, we filmed the apparent last season of Blue Bloods, and it’ll air starting in October. Maybe there’ll be something else after that,” he told concertgoers at the time, according to a clip shared by TV Insider. “I don’t know anything officially yet, but there’s things in the works. So maybe something awesome will happen.”

Abigail Wants the Cast to Take on ‘Chicago’

Hawk exclusively told Us in fall 2024 that she’d like to enlist her former Blue Bloods costars to do their own version of Broadway’s Chicago. “It would be the coolest thing ever,” she said. “I would love it.”

The actress pointed out that Gregory Jbara (who portrayed Garrett Moore) is a Tony Award winner, so she envisions him playing Billy Flynn. Hawk said she’d play Roxie Hart and Robert Clohessy (who played Sid Gormley) would be Amos. “They would sell out every single night,” she claimed. “Everybody would be like, ‘No, just take my money. Just take it.’ This is what I believe.”

Hawk’s dream cast would also include Moynahan as Velma, calling the role “unexpected” but a “great” one for her. She said that since Vanessa Ray, who played Eddie Janko on the series, sings, she’d be “incredible too.”

Hawk further joked that Cariou would sit front row at their future production, but Selleck would “come in full disguise” to fly under the radar.

Donnie Is ‘All For’ a Possible Spinoff

“There’s been a lot of talk about spinoffs, about various spinoffs, all types of concepts of spinoffs. I, for me personally, would say whatever happens next, if it’s done with the spirit of Blue Bloods and done with the care that we tried to put into Blue Bloods every week, it would be something that I would look forward to watching or being a part of either way,” Wahlberg told TV Insider in October 2024. “I’ve heard stories of prequels, sequels, you name it. For me personally, I love the show. I’ve enjoyed working on it for 14 years, and like I said, whatever comes next, as long as it has family at its core and the spirit of Blue Bloods, then I’m all for it.”

Tom Is ‘Open’ to It

“I’m open to suggestions, because I love Frank Reagan, but nobody’s really asked,” Selleck told Parade magazine in a cover story published in December 2024. “I don’t see him retiring and going off somewhere.”

The actor noted that as he waits to see whether Frank Reagan gets a second life, he’s been contemplating his next gig. “I don’t know where my next job will take me. A good Western is always on my list. I miss that. I want to sit on a horse again,” he added. “I would love to do another comedy. The right kind of comedy. Friends made people laugh and cry at times. That’s the kind of comedy I enjoy doing.”

Why Didn’t They Try Streaming?

Selleck told Variety in December 2024 that he couldn’t think about a spinoff when he’s still baffled about the cancellation. “I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do 10 episodes a year. But I’m not the boss,” he confessed. “Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience. I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it.”

The Chapter Isn’t Closed

“I love the character of Danny Reagan,” Wahlberg exclusively told Us in December 2024, noting that he doesn’t feel like he’s “permanently closing the door” on his Blue Bloods persona. “It’s been one of the great highlights of my career to have gotten to play that character, to play him without the rest of the Reagans or in some spinoff it would need to be done carefully and with a lot of consideration for the last 14 years of the show.”
