Though temperatures have fluctuated in Western North Carolina in recent weeks, the winter solstice is on its way, bringing the longest night and shortest day of the year.

Here are the answers to a few common questions.

When is the winter solstice 2024?

In 2024, the winter solstice falls on Dec. 21 at 4:21 a.m. EST.

What is the winter solstice?

The winter solstice also marks the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. It occurs when the Earth’s axis tilts farthest from the sun, bringing the longest night and shortest day of the year.

During the winter solstice, we are tilted as far away from the sun as possible. This also means that the sun’s path across the sky is as low as it gets.
