What’s New
In a holiday-themed video posted on Monday, Mary Trump, the estranged niece of Donald Trump, revealed the “worst” gifts she ever received from the president-elect.
Newsweek reached out to Donald Trump’s transition team on Christmas morning for comment.
Why It Matters
Mary Trump has long been a vocal critic of her uncle and often takes to the internet to express her concerns.
In November, after beating Vice President Kamala Harris, Donald Trump was deemed the winner of the 2024 presidential election. He will take office at the White House on January 20. President Joe Biden has promised a peaceful transition.
What to Know
On Monday, in a holiday-themed video, Mary Trump highlighted her holiday memories in which she “reveals Trump family Christmas chaos,” according to the YouTube video title.
In the nearly 17-minute-long video, Mary Trump discusses some of the presents she received from her uncle when she was a child, saying she doesn’t remember if Donald Trump ever bought her presents before he was married to Ivana Trump in the late 1970s. Donald and Ivana Trump divorced in the 1990s, and Trump has been married to his wife and incoming First Lady Melania Trump for nearly 20 years.
Among the gifts Mary Trump received from her uncle and aunt at the time was a “singular shoe” stuffed with cellophane-wrapped hard candy, which Mary Trump guessed was a regifted “party favor” Ivana received from a luncheon she attended. That same year, Mary Trump said her brother received a leather-bound calendar for two years’ prior, which launched their competition on who could receive the “worst” gift.
Mary Trump often expresses her concern about her uncle in a public manner, typically on the internet. Among her recent concerns, she has warned that “we’re doomed” after Donald Trump’s defamation lawsuit against ABC News was settled earlier this month. The news agency agreed to pay $15 million toward Trump’s presidential library and issue a public apology to settle a defamation lawsuit over inaccurate statements made by anchor George Stephanopoulos during a broadcast earlier this year.
What People Are Saying
Mary Trump said in the video: “Ivana made it memorable in a way nobody had before.” She then described how before Ivana and Donald Trump married, she mostly received clothes that either didn’t fit or that she would never wear. “And then in 1977, I opened my very first present from Donald and Ivana, and it was a box of underwear. A three-pack of underwear, retail $12 from Bloomingdales. It was a very exciting moment, and it just kind of got weirder from there.”
What Happens Next
Trump will return to the White House for his second term in January.
