Sodexo, a global provider of food services, has unveiled its plan to establish close to 100 “Food Hive” convenience stores at college institutions across the US by 2026.

The company is currently progressing towards its immediate target of launching around 30 Food Hive locations for the academic period of 2024-2025.

The Food Hive concept is designed as a rapid, cashless shopping solution that emphasises community engagement by promoting products from local, minority-owned, and women-owned businesses, alongside offering health-conscious choices for the student population.

Sodexo Campus Marketing head Drew Nannis said: “We know that Gen Z prefers shopping experiences that support their community while getting what they want as fast as possible with frictionless checkout.

“Food Hive delivers just that, fuelling stronger campus communities and providing the convenience today’s students need.”

Sodexo Campus partners with approximately 425 educational institutions throughout the US to deliver innovative dining solutions that enhance campus life.

Research from Sodexo’s Quad Squad, a specialised team focused on student insights, reveals that Gen Z students have a strong preference for convenient shopping options that offer a significant variety (57%) and healthful selections (47%).

Additionally, modern students place great importance on smooth payment processes and seek out retail experiences that promote inclusivity through supporting small businesses.

Several universities, including Morehouse College, University of Illinois Chicago, Northern Arizona University, Texas Christian University, and Hamline University, are among those expected to introduce, or have already launched, their own Food Hive markets.

These venues aim to satisfy Gen Z’s expectations by providing locally-sourced and minority-owned product options with hassle-free checkout systems.

Sodexo Northern Arizona University district manager Rose Wilson said: “I’m delighted to announce the upcoming Food Hive concept at NAU. This innovative c-store will not only provide our students with a diverse selection of hot and cold food options but also meet their personal and grocery needs.

“The modern flow of the store, including self-checkout, will enhance efficiency and convenience for everyone. I can’t wait for our students to experience this fantastic one-stop-shop addition to our campus when we open in the spring of 2025.”

“Sodexo to expand Food Hive stores to 100 US colleges by 2026 ” was originally created and published by Retail Insight Network, a GlobalData owned brand.
