Barring unforeseen salary-clearing and a slew of moves, the Yankees will not land Alex Bregman and the lengthy contract he commands. The most likely fallbacks at second/third base, either through trade or free agency, are lower-tiered options who can be had without a major commitment in terms of money, years or prospect cost. Brian Cashman & Co. have checked in on Jorge Polanco; reportedly have reached out to Brendan Rodgers; and at least have discussed a trade for Luis Arráez ahead of his walk-year.

There are worlds in which one of these infielders is added — say, Rodgers on a one-year pact — and there are worlds in which the Yankees punt on acquiring a proven fourth starting infielder until the trade deadline and opt for an in-house tryout in Tampa.

In both of these worlds, there will be a competition among a pair of infielders fighting for their Yankees lives.

This could be the last chance for DJ LeMahieu to prove he is still a major league player.
