The South Florida Fair is nearly here and sure there are rides, shows, live music and exhibits, but, for some, the true thrill is taking their taste buds on a ride that will leave them shaken and stirred (in a wonderfully good way) after sampling some true culinary creativity.

Kicking off on Jan. 17 and running through Feb. 2, the 2025 fair will feature 110 food booths, including several newcomers that are sure to tempt, and 11 tied into this year’s theme of “Imagine the Future.”

They are calling the fare that falls under this theme … wait for it: “New Foods of the Future.” You may scratch your head just a bit thinking “future”? But just go with it and imagine yourself on a trip through time and space while digging into a plate of Future Flame Tenders from Sivori Catering, a Holographic Cheesy Jalapeno Pretzel Dog at Gertrude’s Pretzel, Pop Rocket Fried Oreos from the Cookie Jar, a Flaming Hot Cheeto Corn Dog at George’s Fun Food and more before washing them down with a Milky Way Sweet Pickle Shake from Miller & Co. Ice Cream.

If this doesn’t have those taste buds flying through hyperspace like the Millennium Falcon doing the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, nothing will.

Guests who sample all 11 can even vote on which of them is the best at: southfloridafair.com/FOODSOFTHEFUTURE

I know I just said that if those foods couldn’t get your warp drive going then nothing would, but these two newbies to the fair might just have what it takes to get you to light speed and beyond:

  • Winner of the 2023 People’s Choice Best Fair Food at the North Carolina State Fair, Forke’t Me Not (already a winner in my book with a name like that) and promises sweet satisfaction with gourmet tacos, mac n’ cheese and more. Additionally, Forke’t Me Not also has an entry in the “Imagine the Future” camp with their Hyper Cajun Taco that promises to have you singing some serious Zydeco (just kidding, but you never know).

  • Another newbie is Hog Wild BBQ. With their pulled pork sandwiches, brisket, ribs and smoked turkey legs you’ve got barbecue 101. After that, throw in their redneck nachos, butt fries and bull fries for some upper level course work.

This is the time to forget your step count, your intermittent fasting, juice cleansing — or whatever ridiculous idea Tik Tok has lodged in your head — and live. As Nanea Hoffman once said, “None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Eat the delicious food.”
