You have to be an extremely brave man to ask a woman her age — especially if she happens to be a Hollywood actress — but Bradley Cooper is clearly a brave man: he foolishly asked Amy Schumer if she was 50 yet!

Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, January 28, Schumer — who is actually only 43 — revealed that she had run into the actor earlier in the week. “So I saw him, and you know ‘how are you?’, and he said ‘You know, I turned 50 this year’ and he goes ‘You 50?’,” she said. “I tried to recover — you know, I’m 43 — so I’m like, ‘I will be 50! But I’m not 50 yet! Yeah no, I’m not, Bradley, but thank you for thinking of me!’.”

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with being 50 — Cooper himself celebrated his big birthday just a few weeks back, on January 5 — but when you’re only in your early forties, that question has got to sting a little. Schumer, who is promoting her new Netflix movie Kinda Pregnant, added: “Look, we all want to be hot. People go through a lot to be hot. This is how bad people want to be hot: people literally run!”

It sounds like Schumer is no stranger to awkward encounters though: she also told Fallon that she is frequently mistaken by members of the public for her fellow comedy actresses Melissa McCarthy and Rebel Wilson — but it doesn’t bother her at all. “And I should be so lucky,” she said. “I don’t correct them. I just go, ‘Yeah, Bridesmaids changed my life’.”

Schumer and Cooper actually go back a long way — she has previously talked openly about her out of control crush on the charismatic actor. In another chat with Jimmy Fallon, back in 2015, she said that Cooper is “the kind of hot, trust me, when he is in front of you, you just grab your ankles.” She added: “You would just say things you didn’t mean. Like, ‘any hole’s fine’.”

She also joked that, after a 30 minute conversation with the actor, she was “pretty sure” they were dating. “I changed my Facebook status from “it’s complicated” to “I’m engaged to Bradley Cooper”!” she said.

In the same 2015 interview, she said that Cooper is all too aware of her crush. “I always harass him,” she said.  “I feel very uncomfortable talking to somebody that handsome. He’s very charismatic and stares into your eyes and asks you questions, which no man does.”

Unfortunately, she probably wasn’t anticipating that, a decade on, one of those questions would be about her age. There’s just one thing we want to know: when Schumer’s 50th birthday does finally roll around in June 2031, will Cooper make the guest list?
