The Iowa City Press-Citizen Student of the Week poll has returned for another round of voting.

Each week, Johnson County high school principals and faculty are asked to nominate students who excel in and out of the classroom.

The public can vote at press-citizen.com until noon on Thursday, Feb. 27. The winner will be announced on Friday, and an accompanying story will be published in the Press-Citizen.

Students from public and private high schools in Johnson County are eligible to participate.

Iowa City West High School senior Junze Sun was the most recent Student of the Week.

Here are this week’s nominees:

Raphael Etuma, Iowa City High School

Iowa City High School junior Raphael Etuma is an accomplished student who challenges himself with AP and honors-level courses. He is a musician who plays in the school’s Philharmonic Orchestra and is also a three-sport athlete playing football, track and field, and wrestling. Etuma recently qualified for the state quarterfinals in wrestling.

Molly McLaughlin, Iowa City Liberty High School

Iowa City Liberty junior Molly McLaughlin has made the honor roll every trimester, maintaining a 4.0+ GPA. She is active in Liberty’s National Honor Society and has participated in mock trial, basketball, softball, and tennis. McLaughlin is also the co-founder of the Student Support Club, a volunteer organization that partners with the Liberty Fund to raise money for free and reduced AP testing, standardized testing preparation materials, school supplies, and school event tickets. Outside of school, McLaughlin is dedicated to philanthropic endeavors, volunteering weekly at the after-school program for the Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County for elementary school kids in the Iowa City School District.

Abigal Santillan, Iowa City Regina Catholic High School

Iowa City Regina junior Abigal Santillan maintains a 4.0 GPA and, by the end of the school year, will have completed four AP courses. She is an active member of the National Honor Society and participates in the student ambassadors’ program. Santillan is heavily involved in the drama department and works in various roles as stage manager, tech director, and mentor. Recently, she was honored as an all-state participant on Regina’s Speech team for improvisation. Santillan also volunteers in music ministry at St. Thomas More Parish.

About Student of the Week

The Press-Citizen’s Student of the Week is a regular contest throughout the academic year. Polls will open on Mondays and close on Thursdays. Students from public and private high schools in the Iowa City area are eligible to participate.
