Angelina Jolie’s red-carpet style will be sorely missed from this year’s Oscars show.

The 97th annual Academy Awards ceremony is about to kick off—but it’ll do so without the A-list actor in attendance. Jolie was nowhere to be seen on the red carpet or inside the Dolby Theatre, but the reason for her absence is pretty self-explanatory.

While Jolie received critical acclaim for her role as opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s Maria—indeed, even earning a Best Actress nod at the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Golden Globes earlier this year—she was ultimately snubbed from a nomination at the 2025 Oscars. Instead, this year’s Best Actress nominees include Karla Sofía Gascón, Cynthia Erivo, Mikey Madison, Demi Moore, and Fernanda Torres.

Jolie previously opened up about her connection to the real-life opera diva in an August 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’m sure there’s a lot that will be read into it of our overlaps as women, but the one that’s maybe not the most obvious is I’m not sure how comfortable we both are with being public. And there was a pressure behind the working that wasn’t just the joy of the work,” she said at the time. “And yet I do love to create, she does love to sing, but sometimes there are all these other things that take that joy away and change the experience of that. It was quite hard, what she went through. People were quite aggressive when she wasn’t able to be what they wanted her to be. They were very unkind, and she carried a lot of trauma, and she worked very, very hard. I just began to really care about her and wanted that aspect of the story to be told.”
