In a season of breakthroughs, sixth-ranked St. John’s could be in line for another.

A week from Wednesday, on the opening day of the Big East Tournament, the league’s Player of the Year will be announced, as voted on by the coaches. Red Storm leading scorer RJ Luis Jr. is a top candidate. The last Johnnie to win the award was Walter Berry, way back in 1986.

The Post takes a look at the favorites for the award with a week to go in the regular season.

The best player on the best team typically wins this award, and that honor belongs to Luis. Limited a year ago by shin splits in each leg, the junior underwent surgery in the spring and returned a different player — more consistent, more explosive and ready to live up to his potential.
