The Ocala Star-Banner first published in 1943, when John H. Perry Sr. brought together the Ocala Morning Banner and the Ocala Evening Star newspapers, which had competed against each other for the preceding 50 years.
Today, our award-winning news team lives in and loves the communities it covers in Ocala and all of Marion County. We aim to provide accurate, fair coverage, including crucial reporting on education, local politics, public safety, arts and entertainment, food and dining, growth and development and high school sports.

Awards won by the Star-Banner
Over the years, the Star-Banner has won multiple awards from the Florida Press Club and the Florida Society of News Editors (FSNE) for news reporting, arts reporting, business reporting, photography, video and multimedia.
Together with its sister paper, the Gainesville Sun, the Star-Banner won FSNE’s top honor, the Gold Medal for Public Service, in 2014 for “Fragile Springs,” a look at our region’s springs network. It won the same award in 2011 for a story about government salaries.

The Star-Banner, part of the USA TODAY Network, is owned by Gannett Co. The Star-Banner was previously part of the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group, Halifax Media and GateHouse Media. In 2019, Gannett merged with GateHouse to become the newspaper’s current owner.
