Details are emerging regarding the shocking death of former Buccaneers running back Doug Martin, with the East Bay Times reporting his passing came while in police custody.

Martin, who passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 36, was in a hospital in Oakland, Calif., after police were responding to a 4:15 a.m. ET home break-in allegedly involving Martin.

After the break-in, police responded to a home near the Oakland Zoo where the suspect was already having a “medical emergency” and then a “brief struggle” ensued.

The former Buccaneers and Raiders star reportedly resisted arrest when police attempted to detain him, became unresponsive and was transported to a hospital, where he later died, according to Oakland’s local Fox affiliate.

“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the family said in a statement. ”Cause of death is currently unconfirmed.”

Martin’s cause of death is still under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies.

The officers involved in the incident were put on administrative leave, as is customary.

Martin was selected No. 31 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2012 NFL Draft and ran for 5,356 yards in his seven-year career.
