US President Donald Trump has scored a legal win after a court on Wednesday dismissed the case against him over allegations of attempted election fraud during the 2020 presidential election in the US state of Georgia.
The judge approved a request from the Georgia prosecutor’s office to end the proceedings, US media reports said.
US broadcasters CNN, NBC and PBS, newspapers the New York Post and the New York Times and others reported that recently appointed prosecutor Peter Skandalakis said he would not pursue the charges.
They cited Skandalakis as saying it was not in the interest of Georgia’s citizens to pursue this case for another five to 10 years.
In 2020, Democrat Joe Biden won the presidential election against Trump. In Georgia, the Republican narrowly lost.
The indictment accused Trump and several alleged accomplices of pressuring public officials to violate their oaths of office in order to overturn the election result in Georgia.
Trump does not admit his election defeat to this day, instead claiming that he was robbed of victory through election fraud. This has been disproved.
Some of Trump’s former associates reached an agreement with the prosecutor’s office in the proceedings and pleaded guilty.
Trump won the presidential election in November 2024 against Democrat Kamala Harris, and he is currently serving his second term.
