Hillary Trubisky, the wife of Bills backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky, was especially emotional over Buffalo’s decision to part ways with head coach Sean McDermott on Monday, two days after the team’s 33-30 overtime loss to Denver in the divisional round.

In a message posted Tuesday on her Instagram Story, Hillary explained she and Trubisky became close with McDermott and his wife, Jamie, after he signed a two-year deal with the Bills in March 2024.

“Jamie and Sean are a huge reason why Buffalo has always felt like home to us,” Hillary wrote Tuesday alongside McDermott’s farewell statement shared by NFL Network. “So thankful for you both and everything you have done for our family on and off the field. Wherever you go next is very lucky.

“Love you [Jamie]. Our night time dog walks, car pooling, and slime sales with the kids will always have a special place in my heart. You are truly a one of a kind human being and I am so lucky our paths crossed.”

McDermott was fired five weeks after a continuous meeting with general manager Brandon Beane and owner Terry Pegula about roster deficiencies, WGRZ reported Tuesday.

Beane and Pegula reportedly weren’t pleased that McDermott had “pointed out what the roster lacked to win a Super Bowl.”

The report did not elaborate further.

NFL Network also reported that “McDermott himself had some questions about how much talent the Bills had,” which might’ve ruffled some feathers.

In a statement Monday, Pugula said the Bills “are in need of a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level.”

The Bills fired McDermott after nine seasons and no Super Bowl appearances.

He compiled a regular-season record of 98-50 and a postseason mark of 8-8, including two AFC Championship losses to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Saturday’s overtime loss to the Broncos was the fourth time in five seasons Buffalo was eliminated in the divisional round.

McDermott called the Bills’ coaching job “a gift” in a statement while thanking the Pegula family, the organization and the fanbase.

“Bills Mafia, you are one of one! It has been a joy and inspiration to witness your passion and commitment first hand,” McDermott wrote. “I always wanted our teams to play with the same level of toughness and grit that is true to Buffalo and that you demonstrate every day!

“God gave me and my family an incredible opportunity, one that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. Yet we know that HE has a plan. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your head coach.”

Beane, meanwhile, was promoted to the President of Football Operations and will lead the search for the next head coach.

Outside of Buffalo, the current NFL coaching openings include Arizona, Baltimore, Cleveland, Las Vegas and Pittsburgh.
