Martin Short is sharing details on how he nearly ruined Selena Gomez’s wedding to Benny Blanco.

During an appearance on the Wednesday, January 21, episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Only Murders in the Building star, 75, recalled what it was like attending his costar’s nuptials to the music producer in Santa Barbara, California, in September 2025.

“The wedding was perfect. It was beautiful,” Short said, before revealing how he committed the ultimate wedding faux pas.

Short continued, “Everything was perfect, except, the night of the reception … it was a big, big party, imagine a stage, dance floor, musicians. … At the back of the tent were these individual seating areas with couches and chairs. So if you had a group — we had a group [of] Only Murders in the Building [cast and crew], there was about 12 of us. All of us together.”

“There was a cake, a wedding cake, by our section, but it was a small wedding cake. I just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back,” the comedian explained. “After a few hours, they haven’t cut their wedding cake yet, Steve [Martin] said he’s gonna leave. I was like, ‘Oh, wait.’ Maybe I’d had a cocktail. I had a fork in my hand. I said, ‘Steve, you can’t leave yet without a piece of wedding cake!’ and I cut the wedding cake with one side, cut it the other, and then all the people in our group screamed, ‘Marty!’ It was the wedding cake. I tried to fix it with a fork.”

Short joked that his actions left Martin, 80, “so stunned” that “he gained color,” while Short turned to fellow guest Paul Rudd and said, “So, do we just leave?”

Thankfully, Gomez and Blanco’s wedding coordinator and chef were on hand to rectify Short’s handiwork.

The actor said the chef “did surgery” on the cake, quipping that it was a “Hollywood wedding cake in that it was beautiful, but now it had a little work done.”

Short and Martin tried to keep the incident from Gomez, 33, on her big day, but it seems she found out.

“I kept saying, ‘No, guys, we can’t let Selena know,’” Short recalled. “And Steve said, ‘Yeah, maybe we tell her in a month or something.’ And then as I was leaving, Selena came by [and said], ‘Hey Marty, I heard you tried to eat my cake.’”

Despite his escapade at the celebrity wedding, Short praised Gomez and Blanco’s union.

“It is such a great thing to go to a wedding where you just know that these people are perfect for each other,” he said. “You know, Selena is like an extra child of mine. I adore her so much. And she found this guy, and he’s the greatest guy, and they have the greatest hang, and they’re wildly in love.”

A source previously told Us Weekly of the nuptials, “The wedding was pretty simple and not your typical ‘celebrity’ lavish wedding. They both just wanted to dance and have fun, and you could feel so much love from them.”

Gomez and Blanco first sparked dating rumors in December 2023. In December 2024, they announced they had gotten engaged.
