Seemingly no one is throwing snowballs of interest into Mac Jones’ camp.
A market for the 49ers’ backup quarterback has not yet emerged, per a report from The Athletic.
However, it’s not a total shock.
The 49ers aren’t looking to trade Jones after signing him a year ago to a two-year deal, which gave them full control over the 27-year-old’s rights for the 2026 season.
General manager John Lynch said Tuesday that “we’re a better team with him on it,” but if San Francisco finds another No. 2 option for the right price — a likely third-round pick or higher — they may turn their heads elsewhere.
The Vikings, Dolphins, Jets and possibly the Falcons are all looking for a starter.
Jones is due to make $3.25 million this year and the Alabama product may want a raise if he is to link up with another team, which complicates things. Teams may a cheaper option than trading for Jones and extending his contract.
For now, teams are looking at the open market, studying their options for the upcoming season before looking to secondary options, such as the 2021 first-round pick. There are still cuts expected to be made as well, with Tua Tagovailoa, Geno Smith and Kyler Murray potentially set to join Kirk Cousins as free agents.
Jones had a solid season in 2025, holding down the fort when Brock Purdy dealt with multiple injuries. He won five of his eight starts and completed 70 percent of his passes during that span to help push the 49ers to the playoffs in what was an injury-filled year.
Across 11 total games, he threw 2,151 yards for 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.
While the conversation around Jones has been quiet among NFL camps, he has made some noise elsewhere throughout the offseason.
He was seen taking a shot and throwing the nip into a gong recently at what appeared to be in a backyard 49ers offseason party.
During the major blizzard that hit New York two weeks ago, Jones took part in the viral snowball fight in Washington Square Park — captioning a TikTok video of himself “snowball launchmaxxing.”
