WASHINGTON — The threat to Americans from international terrorist groups is “higher now than it’s been in decades” as the war against Iran nears the end of its second week, Sen. Ted Cruz has warned.
“We had four years under Joe Biden of open borders,” Cruz (R-Texas) told Fox News host Sean Hannity Wednesday night.
“We had 12 million people flood across the border – basically an open invitation to every terrorist, every Hamas and Hezbollah and [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] terrorist, come to America.”
Cruz spoke hours after The California Post and other outlets revealed that the FBI recently alerted Golden State cops that the bureau had been tipped off that Iran “allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United States Homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event that the US conducted strikes against Iran.”
Multiple politicians and experts have warned about the risks of Iran triggering so-called “sleeper cell” attacks in the US as the conflict drags on.
“I don’t know what sleeper cells are in here [if] they activate those,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told The Post Tuesday. “This was not an easy decision for [President] Trump to make. This was a risky decision for Trump to make. But he had to do it.”
Trump himself told reporters Wednesday that his administration is on the lookout for potential threats to the homeland as war rages half a world away.
“I have been [briefed on Iranian sleeper cells] and a lot of people came in through Biden with his stupid open border, but we know where most of them are,” the president said.
“We got our eye on all of them, I think.”
Cruz has been supportive of Operation Epic Fury and argued Wednesday that the Israeli strikes that took out late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei improved national security.
“Removing the Ayatollah makes America much, much safer,” he told CNN’s “State of the Union” earlier this month.
The Republican also recently predicted that Trump will keep up the fight with Iran “until they get a regime there that is not a radical Islamist regime that is waging war with America.”
