There are signings based on so many different things, when it comes to a newcomer arriving on the scene.
Sometimes, the hope is the player will continue to do what he did with his previous team. Sometimes, there were physical issues in the past and the hope is health will be restored with a fresh start elsewhere. Sometimes an older player is on the downside and he comes aboard to add some guidance and maturity to his new environment.
Sometimes, a signing is made because there is a feeling there is untapped potential waiting to be unleashed. The résumé is what it says and the modest career production is out there as evidence on the stat sheet. Someone who knows this player believes the résumé does not tell the story of what comes next.
