Carson Benge grounded a single through the right side in his final plate appearance on Wednesday to snap an 0-for-24 stretch that began in March.
The rookie who looked so good for the Mets in spring training and won a starting job in the outfield is learning that pitchers at the major league level are quick to spot weaknesses, particularly in a young player, and then look to exploit them.
Benge owned a .108/.214/.189 slash line as Thursday’s play began and was on the bench as the Diamondbacks started left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez in the series finale at Citi Field.
The underlying metrics presented a picture for Benge not much rosier than his batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
