An injury may keep Carlos Alcaraz from going for a three-peat at the French Open.
The two-time defending champion is currently sidelined due to a wrist injury, and tests this week will determine whether the 22-year-old can step on the clay at Roland Garros next month.
“We’ll see,” Alcaraz told Spanish television channel TVE on Monday at the Laureus World Sports Awards, where he was named World Sportsman of the Year, according to the Associated Press. “The next (medical) test will be crucial.
“We’ve been trying to do everything we can do to make sure that this test goes well. I’m trying to be very patient. But we are good, we are just waiting a little bit. We have a few tests in the next few days and then we will see how the injury is, and what the next steps will be.”
The Spaniard withdrew from the Barcelona Open last week after his opening match and then had to pull out of this week’s Madrid Open.
The 2026 French Open begins May 24.
Alcaraz is the reigning champion at the Italian Open, which begins in two weeks in Rome and is the final ATP Masters 1000 tournament before the French Open.
“For now, I’ve been trying to stay positive, to stay upbeat, even though these days have become a bit too long,” Alcaraz said.
Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have become the faces of men’s tennis, with their burgeoning rivalry likely to carry the sport for years to come.
By defeating Novak Djokovic to win the Australian Open for the first time this year, Alcaraz became the youngest man to complete the career grand slam.
He won back-to-back Wimbledon titles in 2023 and ’24 and captured U.S. Open crowns in 2022 and ’25.
Alcaraz defeated Sinner in both of his major victories last year and fell to Sinner in the 2025 Wimbledon final.
